Maureen's Story
Life
I moved into San Marcos in March, now my commute is 5 minutes to Texas State and 10 minutes to AWARE (where I teach therapeutic horseback riding.) I spent a busy summer: riding instructor in the morning and university instructor in the afternoon and evening. Work on my home went on hold at the beginning of June, so now that the summer is over, I'll finally have time to unpack the office and paint the master bed and bath. Earlier renovations included putting porcelain tile through most of the house, painting the public areas, enlarging and covering the patio (which the dogs appreciate.)
My son, Chris, is a junior history major at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. If you read this earlier, he was a music major. Then he met music literature and music theory. Workplace
Most of my career has been in public schools (7-12) teaching science. For the past 13 years, I was teaching Chemistry at a 2A Texas HS. One year ago, I gratefully left to accept a position in the Biology Department of Texas State University as a Senior Lecturer for General Science (science education for elementary education majors.) I teach 2 classes and am lab coordinator. Currently, I am spending a lot of time writing new labs. I love my job.
I am also a therapeutic horseback riding instructor. I have worked with individuals aged from 18 months up (60 is the oldest I have personally worked with, but as long as a doctor oks them, we take older) having a mental, emotional, or physical disability. I say it is a therapy for me because it never fails to lift my spirits to teach these classes. As we are a low budget nonprofit organization, I volunteer my time to help care for the 15 horses we have.
