Maureen's Story

I went to Kenilworth Elementary School in Phoenix in 7th grade (' 66-'67) and my best friend was Margie Bracy. Some of the kids we hung out with were ( now mind you, I am trying to think back a LOT of years - and, due to moving away I haven't had much , if any , contact with these folks in just as long a time) Gordon Mull, Russell Tucker, Anne Howell, Terry Keown (?), Marvin Hoffman, Greg Osborne, and Patty Coffey. I lived in the (southeast) corner house at 9th Ave and Palm Lane in Encanto. I moved to Houston, Texas the summer of 1967. Some of my best memories of that time were going to a Monkee's concert at Veteran's Coliseum, hanging out in Encanto Park, going to the State Fair (only a mile from my house!), and making groovy pop art posters using fluorescent paint. My older sister was a sophomore at West High, and there were plenty of parties at my house...good times, for sure! In Houston, I went to Spring Oaks Junior High for 8th grade, then Spring Woods High for Freshman year. My Dad was in the "oil business" and for some reason, we moved almost as often as kids whose parents served in the military. For me, it was just normal to move often. It took a while to build friendships, and while I can remember most of my best friends, and some of those boys who made big impressions (!), I have to say that keeping those connections alive was not possible. I was at Miami Killian High School for my Sophomore and a little bit of my Junior year. I had a boyfriend, Scott Marks, who went to Coral Gables High. I hung out with Scott Kantor, Dennis Miller or Mueller(?), Patty Hoffman, David Soloman, Chuck Katz, and Debbie Guisewite (?). I remember going on an overnight field trip to Lakeland , Florida ...Expand for more
with the German Club. I even have photos from it! I should post them! There was also a boy with us who was a foreign exchange student - I think he was German or maybe Austrian.... In my Junior year, there were radical changes at Killian, and we went to split shifts since our school population nearly doubled. This was in fall of 1970. My family was preparing to move to Panama, and so I really had no interest in my studies at this point as I knew we would be moving "any day". Turned out, it was almost 3 months before all the proper paperwork was done, but by that time, I had really messed up my GPA! Best memory of Miami was sailing in Biscayne Bay - just me and my dad. I don't think he had ever sailed a boat, but once we were out in the Bay, it was pure bliss! Oh, and driving the 1966 Mustang he restored. Of course, it wasn't an old car THEN... he just got it a a junkyard and rebuilt it - he loved those pony cars with the 289's! Ok, so the family moved to Panama close to Christmas time in 1970. We lived at the Panama Hilton for at least a month- and boy, what a life that was for a teen-age girl! I met my future first husband ( John Wilhelm, class of '71) and my friend Suzy Hesse right away- and we hung out at various places in the Canal Zone- the "Coffe House" - with Curt Saenz playing his guitar and Bobby Sayre ( the Ambassador's son) providing comic relief. There were parties on the Canal banks, rides on the train to Colon', trips to Boquete' ( Steve Roper, Paul Arhnosson(?) - more pics I need to post!- and plenty of time at the ocean. John and I got married May 26, 1972, and we left Panama the next day headed for Colorado Springs, CO. He was in the Air Force, and my school time was done.
