Maureen's Story

Life My family and I recently moved to Simsbury, Connecticut. We love it here, but not the higher taxes - Ouch! Joel, my husband, and I will have been married 10 years this September. We met back in 1988 while both attending the University of Tampa. Although we met in Florida, we were both from Connecticut (small world). We recently celebrated our twins (April and Andrew) 3 year birthdays. Our lives are completely absorbed in our children now. We have always loved to travel and love the outdoors, and soon enough we can enjoy those things with our kids. College Okay - which one? Let's see - I started off going to college at The University of Tampa in Florida. Those were the best 2 1/2 years of my college life. Great school, great area, best friends and of course that is where I met my husband. I wished I stayed and graduated from there, but things happened that did not allow it. That's a whole other story. Since I did not want to leave the warm south, I slowly moved up the east coast and decided to attend the University of South Carolina, but only for a semester. At that time there was death in the family, so I headed home to Connecticut. While there I worked at Union Trust as a teller and attended Southern Connecticut State University part-time. I can't say I enjoyed SCSU, so I tried Quinnipiac for a few classes, but couldn't afford full-time on a teller's salary. So I had the bank pay for ...Expand for more
me to attend a few classes at Albertus Magnes. I realized that it would take me 10 years to finish school at this rate. So I saved every penny and went full-time at SCSU. I finally graduated suma cum laude from SCSU as a Finance major. So, it took me 6 years to earn a bachelors, but I did it! I probably have enough credits to have a PHd from all the schools that I attended and classes transfered in as electives. I continued taking Accounting classes at Quinnipiac for a few years ( 2 classes away from getting an Accounting degree), but then I decided to have kids. With all this said, as far as my 'college years' go, University of Tampa is what i refer to as my 'college years'. Workplace I have always worked through high school, college...etc. I have held all types of jobs, Whitney Donut Shop, Columbia Yogurt Shop, Temp agencies, catering with Marriott, helper in art gallery, bank teller, check processer... My first real job, believer it or not, was working for the IRS as a Revenue Officer. I lasted there for 2 years and 2 days, but who's counting. The job with the IRS was definitely 'character building'. From there, I worked for People's Bank in the corporate office as a Commercial Credit Analyst. This lead me to my current position working for the State of Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control as a Finance Specialist. I've been here for 7 years and hope to carry it out the duration.
