Maureen's Story

Hey guys; how are you? Me? Well, the current news is that I moved to southern coastal Maine in September '11 and love my new home. It's gorgeous here and the people are wonderful. I've also found quite a few Chicagoans and we've formed a network known as the "transplants from Chitown." I've had several wonderful careers but now I'm happily settling into the one I think I was always destined to have: the life of a writer/author. I write both fiction and non-fiction and had my own OpEd column for awhile with a newspaper in Maine; I specialized in politics and history and my work was picked up and published around the country, in print (newspapers and magazines) and in numerous sources online. I think I may have as many as 100 articles published now, almost all of which are political in nature. Need I tell you that I am a very outspoken progressive liberal? Well, I am. My first novel, January Moon, was published 3 yrs ago and its sequel, March Storm, will be released in early '14. I also have written short stories. At the moment (October '13) I have 2 novels I am finishing and several short stories. They will be in print and published as ebooks. You can find me at Amazon. Please find me on Facebook; I have a personal page and an author page (my author page is Maureen Gill - Windy City Author). We can chat there... and update each other about our lives... past and current! _______ One of Maureen's favorite quotes is:"“Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.” Oscar Wilde "On some positions, Cowardice asks the question, "Is it safe?" Expediency asks the question, "Is it politic?" And Vanity comes long and asks the question, "Is it popular?" But Conscience asks the question, "Is it right?" And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right". MLK "Whoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world." The Talmud "Obama is not a brown-skinned, anti-war socialist who gives away free health care. You're thinking of Jesus." -Bill Mayer "Compassion is not weakness, and concern for the unfortunate is not socialism." Hubert H. Humphrey “Justice will not come to Athens until those who are not injured are as indignant as those who are injured." - Thucydides "Religion is for people who are scared to go to hell. Spirituality is for people who have already been there." (Bonnie Raitt) "History repeats itself and that's one of the things that's wrong with history." (Clarence Darrow) "Those who do not remember their past are doomed to repeat it." (George Santayana) “Men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly found, given and transmitted from the past.” (Karl Marx) "I am a Democrat – without prefix, suffix or apology." (Sam Rayburn) "I never gave anybody hell. I just told them the truth and they thought it was hell." (Harry S. Truman) "When the Republicans stop telling lies about the D...Expand for more
emocrats, we'll stop telling the truth about them." (Adlai Stevenson) "I believe in democratic socialism. We need a society where the motive for the economic system is not corporate profit but the motive is the welfare of people." (Howard Zinn) "A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death." (Martin Luther King, Jr.) “… in a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act" (George Orwell) "Members of congress should be made to wear the same jumpsuits that race car drivers wear, so we know who their corporate sponsors are." (? Unknown) "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends." (Martin Luther King, Jr.) "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke) "Nothing in the world is more dangerous than a sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." (Martin Luther King, Jr.) "I’m a fuzzy-headed warm-hearted liberal and I think fuzzy-headed warm-hearted liberalism is an ideological stance that needs defending – if necessary with a hob-nailed boot- kick to the bollocks of budding totalitarianism." (Charles Stross) "I respect kindness to human beings first of all, and kindness to animals. I don't respect the law; I have total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the road safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and old men and women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer." (Brendan Behan) "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction." (Blaise Pascal) "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross." (Sinclair Lewis) "Compassion is what makes our lives meaningful. It is the source of all lasting happiness and joy....This is not a matter for complicated theorizing. It is a matter of common sense....There is no denying that if society suffers we ourselves suffer. Nor is there any denying that the more our hearts and minds are afflicted with ill will, the more miserable we become. Thus we can reject everything: religion, ideology, all received wisdom. But we cannot escape the necessity of love and compassion." (His Holiness the Dalai Lama; excerpted from "Ethics for the New Millenium") “I can be changed by what happens to me but I refuse to be reduced by it." (Maya Angelou) "There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle." (Albert Einstein) "Life is too short to wake up with regrets. Love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy. They just promised it would be worth it." (I can't pin down who first said this so if anyone knows, please clue me in! Thnx.) "I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." Clarence Darrow) I'm giving the last word to Woody Allen who said: "Eighty percent of success is just showing up." :)".
