Mayla's Story
Hey everyone, I graduated from John W. Cook elementary in 1985 and soon after entered Calumet High School.
While at Calumet, I was on principal scholars and I graduated as one of of the top ten students in 1989. While in high school, I developed a passion for wanting to help children and adults. After graduation, I went to Saint Xavier University and graduated with a BA in Sociology and minor in Family studies. I lived on the dorms in college and there I met my long life partner and the love of my life Ron McManigal. After College, I worked in the area of child welfare, during that time, I realize that in order for me to be more effective, I needed to further my education. p, I graduated in 1999, and I soon began my post graduate career in the field of social work. I worked as a renal social worker with terminally ill patients from 99-2001. yet, I was unsatisfied and I went back to school at UIC and received a certification to work in the school systems. Soon after, I reached my career goal and passion to work with disadvantage children.
Currently, I spend my days professionally dancing with Pendarvis Inc, and Joel Hall. Also, I spend my time traveling in the US, Africa, Europe, Mexico, and Canada because now I am educating my self by meeting new people in the world. Also, I host Chicago Can TV program "Turn it up" on Channel 21. Lastly, on 08/27/2009, I married my life partner Ron who has been my best friend, through my journey in life.
