Megi (Von) (Morton)'s Story

Life I was born in Tampa, Florida at MacDill A.F.B. in 1955 (Air Force brat) - kind of changed my Dad's plans for the 1955 t-bird (2-seater) that he had just ordered! We lived in a small town called Statesboro, Georgia from 1961-67, where I attended Sallie Zetterower Elementary School. We moved to Tucson, AZ in 1967, where I attended Naylor Junior H.S. from 1967-69. We lived on Davis Monthan A.F.B. where I learned to drive on an old runway! I graduated in Tucson from Santa Rita H.S. in 1973 (first 4-year graduating class). I moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1973 with my folks and lived on Elmendorf A.F.B. (skiied, worked, took college classes at the Univ. of AK, and met my fiance). In 1974, we moved to Tampa, Florida and have been here ever since. I married Scott Marsters (fiance from AK) in 1975. We had one lovely daughter named Molly Lyn in 1979. I graduated from Hillsborough Community College's School of Nursing and became a R.N. in 1979. I primarily worked as an oncology nurse or in related fields of oncology over the next several years. Divorced in 1987. I received my B.S.N. in Nursing at the Univ. of Tampa in 1991. I married Mitch Garrison in 1993 and gained a stepson - Jamie. I received my M.S.N./ARNP in Nursing as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in 1999 at the University of South FLorida. I was employed by Bruce Lamb, as a Nurse Consultant/Paralegal at Ruden, McClosky law firm in Tampa until 2008. Then I moved to McCumber Daniels law firm. My hobbies include photography and traveling. I'm a lifetime "cat" person - our current family cat is P.J. (named Pepper Junior after our previous cat of 17 years, Pepper). I'm also a recent chihuahua person - Mom of Elvis since Spring 2005. I'm also a "family" person and was fortunate to have my folks, Tom and Von Morton, living here in town since 1977, until Mom died in 2004. My daughter, Molly, received her B.A. in Communications at my Arma Madre, the University of Tampa, in 2000, and she received her Masters Degree in Integrated Marketing at Emerson College in Boston, MA (youngest graduate at age 23)in May of 2003. My stepson, Jamie, graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance from USF. And my husband, Mitch, owns his own business in interior design "Garrison's Total Interior Design" (his Mom started the company over 40 years ago) and is a realtor for Prudential Tropical Realty. So with a very busy family life, I can actually see how these last 35 years (since graduation from SRHS '73) have flown by! My first high school reunion was my 30 year, and it was something else - I had truly always wanted to attend! School I attended grade school in a small town called Statesboro, Georgia. The school was Sallie Zetterower and I can remember the days of walking to school with friends without a worry in the world! I went to junior high at Naylor in Tucson, Arizona. Now those were a couple of interesting years as we all wanted to grow up so fast! Then I attended Santa Rita High School in Tucson. We were the first four-year graduating class at the new high school. It was a great expe...Expand for more
rience and holds lots of neat memories. I enjoyed being a dancerette on the Pom-Pom squad and a majorette with the band. There were lots of bonfire parties in the desert, drag races on the strip, skip days to Sabino Canyon, and of course lots of hard studying! I attended some general college courses at the University of Alaska in Anchorage in 1973 and 1974. Then moved to Tampa, Florida. I attended Nursing School at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa from 1977 through 1979. After working as a registered nurse, I returned to school at the University of Tampa (part-time) and completed my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing in 1991. I went on to obtain my Master's Degree in Nursing and National Certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) at the University of South Florida in Tampa in 1999. I hope to continue coursework in the future and obtain my PhD in Nursing. We desperately need professors in this field to continue the process of educating new nurses. We're the baby boomers and there will be a lot of us to take care of in the future! College I included this information in the "school bio" previously. Workplace Since graduation from high school I have had a lot of interesting experiences in the work force. I initially worked in a federal civil service position as a Secretary/Administrative Assistant at Elmendorf A.F.B., Alaska. After relocating to Tampa, Florida, I continued working as a Secretary/Administrative Assistant at MacDill A.F.B. In 1977, I decided to attend nursing school full-time. Upon graduation, I worked for my first year in nursing in Pediatric I.C.U. and with pediatric oncology patients at Tampa General Hospital. From there I moved to Women's Hospital and worked for four years as a GYN/Oncology staff nurse. Then I took on a "multi-hat" nursing position for two years at Tampa Bay Community Hospital as Infection Control/Discharge Planning/DRG Coordinator. I moved from there to St. Joseph's Hospital/Cancer Institute and worked as a staff nurse for several years. Then I was promoted to Oncology Clinical Educator (after obtaining my BSN) and continued to work there for a couple more years. I moved to Hospice as a Nurse Manager of an interdisciplinary team for the next couple of years. One of our oncology research physicians opened his own practice, so I worked in his office as a clinical oncology/chemotherapy nurse for a couple of years. When I decided to return to school and obtain my MSN/ARNP, I went back to St. Joseph's Hospital and worked part-time in Ask-a-Nurse and attended school full-time. While in school, our hospital "downsized" and the Ask-a-Nurse department was closed. I took a position (part-time) with an attorney, Bruce Lamb, to learn about the legal field of healthcare/administrative law. After completion of my MSN/ARNP, I continued my career in the legal field and have truly enjoyed this area of practice. After working almost 10 years with Mr. Lamb (he is a partner in the firm Ruden, McClosky here in downtown Tampa), I moved to McCumber Daniels Law Firm in September 2008.
