Melvin's Story

edited October 2010 Hi, I now live in the Kansas City suburb of Blue Springs MO. I am from the Craig/Mound City/Fortescue MO area. I finished two degrees at NWMSU. Since then I have completed 4 degrees/designations and am almost finished with 4 or 5 more. My two daughters Ashlee Fedor(age 37) and Sara Mattson (age 32) are both married, educated, and working. Ashlee and her husband Scott both have my 6 year old first grandson Gavin. Ashlee and Scott both have their MBAs and work for Lockheed-Martin, a government contractor. Sara has finished her Master's while working for the University of Nebraska. Her husband Roger is finished with his Doctorate of Pharmacy at Creighton University in Omaha NE. I spent 38 years in the life insurance and financial services industry. Fortunately I have been cited in 17 national and international Who's Who directories. April 6 2015 was my 71st birthday, and I am now retired. Many of my college and high school friends are still around--so are many of my military and business friends. I would like to hear from all you. What are you doing these days? Most of you remember that Donna Beesley Kunkel, Johnny Hinkle (who is now deceased), and I were Fortescue kids. Fortescue was the III in Craig R III. Mrs. Meyer was our 1st and 2nd grade teacher, both grades all in the same room. I stole my very first kiss, and it was from Donna Beesley when we were in one of Mrs. Meyer's classes. She was leaning down at my desk, and i looked up at that beautiful face, and barely stood up and KISSED her right on the lips. Needless to say she was surprised. H...Expand for more
ey, so was I. I don't think we kissed any more that year. I was scared that Mrs. Meyer would catch us. And who knows, we may have been expelled, whipped, stripped and run through the middle of town by screaming parents or something scary like that. Remember that corporal punishment was legal back then. I was always told that if I got a lickin' at school, I would get another when I came home-never got one at Fortescue--i was too scared to. Let me see now. My sister Phyllis always whipped me when I teased my baby sister Lydia. My late brother Billy LeRoy always whipped me when I came home with my shirts always torn off. And my brother Cecil whipped me when I didn't do the chores or didn't do them right. My brother Kenneth wasn't tough enough, but he did try it once, but only once. In all reality my father grew Poplar trees so my mother and sister Phyllis would have enough switches to whip me. LOL. true, and i swear on a stack of Bibles. My mother whipped me after she made me lay over a chair. My dad didn't whip often, but when he did, he used a rubber hose--and he would forget to stop. Man that hurt, and the bruises on my butt and legs were awful. That is a full blooded German for you. Other than that my father would give me the back of his hand and knock me clear across the room. He had huge hands; size 18 ring. Five of us kids are still living. My Brother Billy LeRoy died in October 2011. Mother and Daddy have been gone a long time, but a day doesn't go by that I don't think of them. Our Class of '62 at Craig High School celebrated our 50th in 2012. Wow. That sure was fun.
