Melanie's Story

I was very introverted in high school. I had many acquaintnces but not many friends. Graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University. Taught English at Andrew Jackson for 3 years and then moved to Placqueines Parish where I taught for another 7years. I had one child, Kristen and she is with me in Las Vegas along with my two grandchildren, Noah and Jillian. I established many floral businesses here and I pioneered the first free standing wedding chapel at the Tropicana Hotel almost 20 years ago. I was invited to open the first flower shop in Caesar's Palace. I also had shops in The Hilton, The Tropicana and an number of local shops when the town was somewhat smaller. I married for the second time to a USC Business Graduate and downsized my businesses. My husband manages my businesses but as owner I am still required to make everyday decisions and train my employees. I have much free time as I pop in and out of the business world. I love my home on the lake and enjoy water sports and gardening. I have truly been blessed in my life and hope that all of my class of 1967 and those students that I taught at A.J. and Promised Land Academy are equally successful and at peace with their lives. My life changed drastically when my husband died in his sleep on April 15, 2011. He was only 65 and in good health. It was one of the biggest shocks of my life. Dealing with this unexpected upset in life as definitely been challenging. I have sold all of my businesses and am currently considering a move back to Louisiana or maybe a foreign country. I have been reluctant to move because of Kristen and my grandchildren. They are encouraging me to move and find that I still do have a life. It has been a long year but perhaps it is time to release everything from my life here in Las Vegas. I wa...Expand for more
s thinking about spending a long term visit to Belize or Coastal Ecuador. I recently watched Eat, Pray and Love. It has got me thinking of just taking off and figuring who and what I am at this stage in my life's journey. At the moment, I am rather empty except for the children and my beloved son in law, Scott. I hope each and every one of you are happy and have been blessed. We all started our journeys together and life has taken my strange turns for all of us at times. I do remember either as classmates and as students who I taught at AJ. and Promised Land, you were all special. Everyone had unique gifts. Mine has always been to journey fearlessly but I have many questions at this point in life and I am not quite as fearless. My best friend when I was at AJ, Marsha Vucich, passed away a month before my husband. We had "found" each other after 30 years of being apart. We spent much time together in the year before she passed away. She visited twice and we even spent Thanksgiving, 2010 together. We never lost our sense of humor as we had a great mashed potato food fight Thanksgiving evening. She died on March 7, 2011. She loved visiting here and I loved when she popped in. She has a beautiful daughter, Kristina, who she worshiped and adored. She was a great mother to Kristina, sister to Lana and Darlene Vucich and friend to many. Though the grace of God, we united that one more year. On her first trip, she brought our year book from AJ 1967 and the Chalmette High School year book of 1966. We laughed alot especially at our hair. When she was leaving I reminded her to pack the year books. She said: No, you keep them. I have them and treasure them very much. So because of Marsha, I visit with you all quite often. Take Care all and make each day count, Melanie
