Melanie's Story

What happened to Melanie after High School? Well, pretty much straight to the school of hard knocks - despite all the pleading of my mom, I chose motherhood over college and gave birth to a lovely daughter (Harmony Grace) on September 19, 1975. I married her father and kept him around long enough to have another gorgeous daughter (Sarah Ruth - 4/20/77), but that was all I could stand of that particular man. Did the single mom routine for a few years and eventually hooked up with a local musician some of you have had the pleasure of jamming with - David Mathews. We spent 4 years together before he hit the road, leaving me with the wonderful parting gift of a son (Jesse Alexander 10/7/82). When I was 3 months pregnant with Jesse, I met a great guy named Randy Davis who was too naive to run for the hills when he saw us coming. He still hasn't wised up, so I've shared the last 27 years with him. Some of those years were great, others not so much, but I think I can tough it out a few more years at least ;). Went back to college when I was 29 and got an AA. I'm 2 classes short of a BA, but family crises made me withdraw and getting back in just dropped lower on the priority list. Oh well. Most of my working life has been in the service field. Loved waitressing, but it didn't love my knees and lower back. I am most successful at providing care and support (read TLC) to the elderly and developmentally disabled - assisting them with living their lives to the very fullest. Doesn't pay much, but you sure can sleep well at night. So far, only one of my kids (Sarah) has blessed me with grandchildren, but what a job she has done! Three stunningly beautiful little girls!!! Kayla Pearl(my redhead) is 13, not that I like to admit that often. Wears a nose ring, loves "Twilight" and is a bookworm like her grandma. MaraJade is 6 years old and could be the poster child for autism with her blonde hair and huge blue eyes. My fears for her future become l...Expand for more
ess and less as my daughter reports she is now reading, writing and doing 'rithmetic! She can say "I love you, Grandma", so what else could possibly matter anyway? Grace Lillian is the newest arrival at one year old. Little Gerber face hides a temper to rival John MacEnroe's! We're thinking we might have yet another redhead on our hands, but she still doesn't have quite enough to tell for sure. Enough about the grandkids as I never want to be one of those grandmas, but you can see for yourself at myspace(ledheadmelli) that I DO have the most beautiful ones. EVER. Harmony is an aide to an autistic boy at a private school and lives with us, while my son lives with her (not quite ex) husband across town. Jesse was recently laid-off from delivering office supplies and is probably currently working on his PhD in Video Game Mastery. Sarah & her man Andy have taken my babies back to Whidbey Island, WA , where I lived between 1996 and 2003 - I'm racking up the frequent flyer miles and burning up my tires making sure they know who their Grandma is! Randy and I are both lazing about the house, keeping a low profile and living off what's left of the insurance settlement from a nasty car accident. Time for one or both of us to get back to work (sigh). Times being hard, we have taken in my sister's oldest son and his family - there are TWO teenage girls under my roof yet again, as well as a 4 yr old boy! I have Rebecca's grandkids and she has mine up on Whidbey - we make it work somehow. My momma passed away in May 2006, just as the housing market started to fall. I moved into her house last February, just to keep up the payments until we can put it on a decent market. Then I am moving to wherever my babies are, hopefully near Spokane. I'm sure that's more than enough to satisfy even the morbidly curious - as you can see, I never lost my gift for gab. Hope to see all you fine folks at the next reunion! Anybody know when and where that might be?
