Melanie's Story

Life I am currently living in Maumelle, Arkansas, after living in Missouri for many years. I have two children, Tom and Lauren. I have not worked outside the home since moving from Springfield in June of 2003. I am active in our church, where I am currently serving on the Building Committee and am a board member of Maumelle Mommy and Me, which is made up of other "desparate housewives" in the area. My days pretty much consist of chasing two preschoolers. We go almost every day to the Maumelle Community Center where I run several miles a day while the kids play in the childcare center. Tom will start kindergarten at Arkansas Baptist in the fall, and Lauren will be attending Mother's Day Out at a church two days a week, so I am looking forward to some free time! I hope to be able to work, part-time, outside the home once Lauren starts kindergarten. Until then, I will continue to work over-time every day at home with no pay or benefits - vacation, sick days, or retirement plan. College I attended Arkansas State University on an ACT academic scholarship from 1990-1994 and received a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology. I loved college and was active in many organizations on campus. I especially enjoyed being a member of Delta Zeta Sorority where I served on the board as Membership Secretary for two years and various other positions. I was selected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities my senior year. I ...Expand for more
moved to Columbia, Missouri after graduating, due to the fact that I had received a nice job offer from a small hospital outside of Columbia. Workplace I lived and worked in Columbia for several years, as a laboratory technologist in two different hospitals. At Columbia Regional Hospital, I worked as customer service rep. for their hospital lab, but ended up returning to back " to the bench" to work in the Hematology department, which was my passion. I met my husband, Dave, while at Columbia Regional, and we married in 1997. In 1998, we moved to Springfield Missouri, after Dave received a job offer with a nuclear pharmacy. I then joined the lab at Smith-Glynn-Calloway. I worked there for about a year and a half part-time and then received a full-time position at Southwest Missouri State University(now Missouri State) in their student clinic. I would continue to work for Smith-Glynn in the evenings and on weekends on a PRN basis. I had joined the Junior League in 1999, which provided a great outlet after I stopped working in 2001 after the birth of our son, Tom. I continued to work at Smith-Glynn a few times a month in the evenings until we moved to Maumelle, Arkansas, in 2003. I was very happy to return "home". Our daughter, Lauren, was born in November of 2004, and I feel very blessed to be able to stay home with both children. Once Lauren starts kindergarten, maybe I will be able to return to work outside the home!
