Melanie's Story

I live in West Los Angeles near UCLA. I love the weather here and the world class culture - we get shows straight from Broadway in New York, and we have a top symphony and opera and many small theaters. I also love taking classes via UCLA extension. Traffic? Yeach. But I run my own business from my home office so I don't have a commute. My business is something I never would have dreamed I'd be doing but the money is very good and my retirement savings were pretty much zilch after I worked in various community service programs that didn't provide retirement benefits. I'm currently writing 2 books - one based on my experience in the Peace Corps in Somalia (northeast Africa) and one based on a relationship I had with an Egyptian man, which brought me into extensive contact with Israelis, Palestinians and others from the Middle East concerned about a solution to the Middle East conflict. When my parents died in 2003 (Mom) and 2004 (Dad), I spent a year or so in Stockton caring for Dad and during that time I worked in the peace and justice movement. Some of the things I did that year were to set up some demonstrations against the invasion of Iraq which led to an extension of citizen rights for Stockton residents, and to write up interviews for a local paper. I focused on Stockton or San Joaquin valley citizens working for various justice-related issues like farm worker rights and Planned Parenthood. I also co-hosted a local cable TV ta...Expand for more
lk show. Now my real estate business and writing take up all my time. I have been single since my divorce long ago. I have 2 kids, Brendan, age 40 who also is in real estate and who got his B.A. and Master's from Stanford and Colette, 38, who attended Univ of Texas, Austin, but didn't graduate because she didn't like her professors. She traveled the world instead and now lives on Maui. My future goals are to spend a few months in Europe, especially in France, in order to become bilingual again, as I was years ago. I also speak Spanish which I improved significantly while living in Colombia SA. After some time in France I'd like to return to East Africa. I am considering an education project with teenagers in Tanzania. I loved Kenya also. I have a California secondary teaching credential and think it would be fun to teach again, but in East Africa. I loved seeing Serengeti, Masai Mara and Ngorongoro Crater and would like to return. Of course some of the very abundant animals who were there 40 years ago, like zebras and rhinos, are very much fewer in number and need our loving support and donations. I also recommend a group called Women for Women International. For $27 a month you can help a woman suffering in the Congo from all the violence there to get basic education in health care, child care and an education in a money-making skill. There's more but this is too long already! Hope to see my classmates at our 50th reunion in 2010.
