Melanie Glover:

CLASS OF 1981
Jeffersonville, IN

Melanie's Story

When I left JHS, I went to college at UofK, but I was miserable there. I stayed off campus at my Aunt's house to save money. My cousin decided I was the way that he, his girlfriend, and all of his other friends could get rides anywhere they wanted. They followed me everywhere I went while on campus, sitting outside my classes to wait for me to come out. To say they were weird would be a large understatement. The things I remember the clearest are the guy who wore a belt with a 3D buckle that was shaped like a giant tarantula, that was larger than my fist. And, my cousin had a car, but it couldn't be put into reverse, so he had to find a place to stop it that didn't require backing up. I also didn't like large campus life, which started when I tried to sign up for Calculus. Having a name at the end of the alphabet, and being a freshman, meant I was in the last group to register. All of the calculus classes were full except one. So, I tried to sign up for it. I was told that I couldn't take that class, so I asked why, since it was open. The advisor eventually pulled me into an empty office, out of hearing from the other kids trying to register, where he explained to me that it was "Football Calculus". Being ignorant about what that meant, I still insisted on being added to that class. He went on to say something about it not meeting on a regular basis, since they travelled to games during the school week. I said I could go on the days when they did meet. Then, he finally told me that if I was planning to major in Math, then I did NOT want to be in that class, because I wouldn't ever learn calculus. I kind of lost my love for the school at that point. I knew going in that some of the athletes weren't the most intelligent students on campus, but I hated hearing that they were given credit for classes they didn't actually attend. I gave up on having a life in Lexington and came back home and went to IUS for a while. Alot of my high school friends also went to IUS, so we started hanging out together again. But, then I started having problems with how my best friend was treating me, and her boyfriend thought it was fun to do things like smash my hand with a calculus book. I decided it was best to just drop off the face of the earth, as far as my old friends were concerned, since they weren'...Expand for more
t really the type of friends I wanted to be around anymore. I eventually transferred to UofL, going to school part time and working full time. 8 years later I finally had my BA in Math. While a student at IUS, I worked in the PC lab, which was just being started at that time. One of the people I helped in the lab recommended me for a 2 week temp job at KFC's headquarters that ended up lasting 5 years. I worked in several different roles in the HR and Comp/Benefits areas, but I also had access to info about people who were going to be laid off, before they knew. I couldn't handle it, when it started hitting people that I knew, so I went searching for another job, ending up at Baptist Hospital for a couple of months, before moving on to GE. I went to work at GE 20+ years ago as a computer consultant. I joined the dba team a couple of months after starting there, because I was the first candidate that was "cerebral" enough for the hiring manager. I'm still there now, working as an oracle dba. (dba = database administrator, but since most people have no idea what that is, I just say I'm a computer programmer) I have 3 kids (guess I should say 2 adults and 1 kid since only 1 is under 18 now) Gretchen graduated from Ringling College of Art, with a BFA in Computer Animation. Nathan is a Senior at JHS, and Zachary is in middle school. I got divorced in 2008, and moved a very short distance from my ex, so the kids can easily walk between the two houses if they choose to. Some people question my sanity on living so close, but I didn't want to change anything more in their lives that what the divorce was already going to do to them. And, it was an amicable divorce, so everything is working out ok so far. It's been a hard adjustment to being single, since I was married for 22 years. I had never lived alone before being married, so this is the first time I've had to deal with everything on my own. There are so many things that I have never done before, that I've had to handle on my own recently. I never thought I would do things like learn how to wire light fixtures on my own, or figure out how to fix leaking toilets, leaking water heaters, gas fireplaces where the pilot light won't fire, etc, etc, etc. It's been one fun experience after another. I can't wait to see what is going to break next!
