Melba's Story
Life
Since high school I have lived most of my life in Childress. However, I lived approximately 5 years in Amarillo and thoroughly enjoyed it. Bill and I divorced in 92 and remarried in 99. Nuts or what? I retired from TxDOT in 1993 as Human Resources Officer. In 94 a couple of friends and I went on a Carribean Cruise. I loved it and everything was so beautiful. I love water. We plan to go on an Alaskan Cruise in 2005, Lord willing. We have a nephew and niece who have gone several times and they will go with us and be our guides. We have taken several wonderful vacations. Our nephew, Eddie Williams and his wife, Lou, took us in their huge motorhome to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee in 2003 for two weeks. We plan to go into New Mexico and Arizona with them this year. They traded in their two year old motorhome and bought a new one. The old one was wonderful and this one is bigger and more wonderful, if possible. All the woodwork on the inside of the motorhome was done by Amish and their work is second to none. It's the only way to rough it. It came complete with washer/dryer, dishwasher and freezer. I am very excited and I want to go right away. However, the kids aren't yet retired and can't drop and leave without some planning for their businesses. We have three precious children. Roger, our oldest, lives in Amarillo. He has three daughters ranging in age from 16 to 26. He remarried a few years ago. His wife, Cyndi also brought three girls to the marriage. They currently range in age from 11 to 15. Our second son, Gregory and his family live in Cedar Park, near Austin. He and his wife have a son, Nick 13 and a daughter, Jordan 10. Our daugher, Susan and her husband, Kevin, live in Turpin, Ok. They have a son, Steven 19, who is...Expand for more
finishing his freshman year at OPSU on a full football scholarship but is thinking of changing to basketball as he has played basketball this last season and loves it. He also was a track star in high school and set an Oklahoma record his senior year. their daughter, Jennifer, graduates high school this year. She too, loves sports. She plans to be a dental hygienist. Because of he GPA, she is a member of the Smart Kids Club. We look forward to attending her graduation in another week. Just as the rest of you are, we are so proud of our children! Honest, hardworking, upstanding citizens. We just returned from Cedar Park a week ago and go to Amarillo frequently. So, a lot of grass doesn't grow under our feet. While livint in Amarillo, I spearheaded a program called Seniors for Childhood Immunization which is still going great. It was a brand new program for Amarillo and has now branched out to several surrounding areas. Working with volunteers is the most rewarding job you can have. Such dedicated people! My job was to recruit and train volunteers to go the hospital and visit with new parents, stressing the importance of timely immunizations. Once the word was out and some of the civic organizations visited to tell them of our need, a few calls to radio and tv stations and before long, we had a wonderful staff of volunteers. When we started the program, Texas was one of the worst for having their babies immunizations before starting to school. The averages are greatly increased now. Our goal is that every child, whether in Texas or any other state to be completely immunized as scheduled, saving the babies from so-called childhood diseases. I have strong convictions about this program. The only drawback, I couldn't touch the babies.
