Melinda's Story

When I graduated in '94, I had big plans to settle down, get married, and have kids. Then my mom, ever so gently, booted me out of the nest (or she at least put the idea into my head), all the way across country to California, San Francisco Bay Area to be exact. Bet she regrets that now... here it is, 14 years later and though I've thought about it a million times or so, I never have made it back "home", at least for anything more than a visit. Though I did move to Chattanooga for one semi-misrable year. What can I say, my life's been pretty good here. Ups and downs sure, and at times it's still a little weird being a "country girl" in such a big city (I think I'm one of 5 or so people in the entire area who actually likes listening to country music!). But overall it's been great. I got my BA in Criminal Justice in 2000, then went on to a career that has very little to do with what I studied for 6 years. For the last 8 years I've worked at a residential facility for severly emotionally distrubed children. Most of our kids have some serious issues due to abuse or neglect and their behaviors (extremely aggressive/assaultive/ self-harming) are such that they currently can't be placed in fo...Expand for more
ster or group homes. So they come live where I work and we try to help them. It's a tough job sometimes, especially when things don't go right and a child makes no improvement. But it's so, so worth it when you see something broken become whole again and know you played a little role in the process! Also, for the last 4+ years I've been our agency's equivalent to an upnight supervisor. This sucks because I have to be the responsible one and sometimes the hours bite; but it's good because I get a little more money and people have to listen to me and do as I say... or at least pretend they do! I'm currently single and never have gotten around to giving my mom those grandbabies she wants, but I figure that's okay, my kids at work keep me busy enough. Besides, I've surrounded myself with some truly incredible friends who also keep me more than busy enough in my down time. Over the years I've done a bit of traveling, a bit of partying, and a whole lot of living. So, yeah, that's pretty much me in a nutshell. Life hasn't turned out exactly as I planned (when does it ever?) and I'm not entirely sure the girl I was at 18 would recognize herself all growed up but what can I say... it's all good.
