Melissa's Story
Life
After graduating from Utah State University with a B.S. in Range Conservation, I worked for the U.S.D.I. Bureau of Land Management in NW New Mexico, USA (near Farmington, NM) and SW Colorado (near Durango, CO)as a Range Conservationist for about 8 years. This area covered over 2 million acres of land, where I worked from the desert to the mesas and mountains with ranchers on grazing, forestry, noxious weed control, and wildland firefighting during summers in several different states across the west.
In 1994 I married Wayne Werkmeister, also a Range Specialist/ Wild Horse Herd Manager with the BLM in Durango, CO. We had a couple of different horse and hay farms in SW Colorado.

we had a son, Kris, and I was able to quit my job and become a stay at home mom for the past 7 years. My husband is originally from NE Nebraska, so we moved there shortly after Kris was born, and traded in the horse lifestyle for the river lifestyle. My husband transferred to the National Park Service here and works on the Missouri River as a Chief of Resources. I enjoy camping and fishing and swimming on the Missouri River, visiting family here, big game and game bird hunting, gardening and canning, reading and quilting. Now that my son is in school all day, we are looking at moving and I am hoping to get back out to work in the field of conservation for one of the federal agencies in the west.
