Melissa's Story
I attended UCSC for two years, then dropped out to dance, or something. I worked for Planned Parenthood and other clinics until I moved back to Palo Alto. There I danced Westwind International Folk Ensemble for the next 8 years. After 4 years I became costume director. I waited tables at various places in Palo Alto; Ramona's, University Creamery, Varsity Theater and Stanford Coffee House. I also designed and created clothing for a vintage and specialty clothing boutique in Burlingame 'The Dusty Rose' for a year, but discovered that my creative side (left brain) is very sporadic and not reliable enough for steady income.
I moved to the city to be closer to my dance friends, worked temp jobs downtown and eventually found myself back in school at SFSU where I earned my Bachelor's in Liberal Studies/Math Education and my Teaching Credential in Mathematics. I earned my way through t...Expand for more
he credential program by teaching at a small private high school in Berkeley.
I was offered a teaching job in Sacramento and moved here with my boyfriend at the time... thinking that we could afford a house here and would settle between the bay area and skiing. We did the whole thing; bought a house, got married and had two kids (Taylor, Riley).
I have been teaching high school mathematics for nearly three decades here and feel so blessed that I love my work more and more each year. When I went back to school in 2008 I bought a tiny(800sq ft) very cute little bungalow near City College here in Sacramento. Although I am upside down in it, as are many in our area, I absolutely love this little place!
I love riding my bike, and living so close to downtown gives me ample opportunity to ride to dancing or second Saturday Art events, as well as for shopping, getting more coffee etc.
