Melissa's Story

I am currently living in Kingwood, Tx with my husband, David and two children, Jackson, 10 and Zoe, 7. We moved here from Phoenix, AZ for David's work. Before that, we were in Austin, Tx.where I am originally from. I moved back to Austin in 1989 to attend graduate school at UT. After graduating from UT in 1989, I married and had the last name of Schulz for 6 years. We divorced in 1997. I met my husband, David after my first visit to the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin and we started dating several months later. We married in 1999 and have been blessed with 2 wonderful children and several good friends in our Austin UU community. It was very hard to leave and we hope to return to Austin someday. orked for 16 years in the public schools in Austin with a year or so of also doing contract work in the healthcare setting. In Phoenix, I worked part-time doing home health and clinical speech therapy with kids 0-10. In high school, we took tests to see what career we were most suited for and mine said Speech-Language Pathology. I dabbled in several majors in college before I finally realized the test was right and now I have been an SLP for about 20 years. Over the years, I have lost my mother to leukemia in 1998, my dad to pancreatic cancer in 2010, and my step-mother to ovarian cancer in summer, 2011. Never in my life did I think I would be parentless in my mid 40s but it sure makes you appreciate every day of your life when you realize how short life really can be. I am really working at living every day fully but it is a work in progress.
