Melissa's Story
Life
Oooooh, how intimidating! My "life bio." Well...after graduating high school I attended the University of Texas, and left there in '92 (after much goofiness and mayhem) with a degree in Radio-TV-Film. As anyone with one will tell you, the most useless degree on the planet, next to the beloved "Liberal Arts." Anyway...after grad I worked at a couple of radio stations in Austin: KNNC (New Rock, now defunct) and KGSR (coolest station ever!). Wasn't an on-air talent - just a receptionist. After a few years of being a receptionist, and NOT wanting to be on the air or selling air, I decided it was time for a change. I moved in with my boyfriend (now my husband) in Dallas, and began grad school. Got married in May of '97, and received my Master's in Communication Disorders in December. Soon after I began a short stint as a Speech-Language Pathologist. My job, working with children 3 years and under and their families, was a great deal of hard work (and driving, and driving, and driving....endlessly driving), but also so much fun! It was a great introduction to the field for me, very challenging, but working with babies is da bomb!
About 15 months after I began working at PRIDE, I became pregnant with my first child. Shortly before her birth in Jan. 2000, I quit my job, and I've been at home ever since. We moved to Houston in 2002 for my husband's job, and that's where we remain (for now - our dream is to return to Austin one day). Our family expanded in 2003, with the birth of a second daughter (who is now five, holy cow!).
So that's where it stands right now. My husband, Tim, is a computer programmer who travels all. the. time. My eldest daughter, Sarah, is eight and in the second grade. She adores school, God love her. Reads like a champ. My youngest, Allison, is five. She's starting kindergarten in just a couple of weeks - eek! My baby! Both are just incredible little human beings. Exasperating at times, yes, but for the most part sweet and lovin...Expand for more
g and kind and hilarious and adorable. What more could a mommy ask for? I also have two other "children," Buster and Mitzi. Buster's our first child, a border collie mix. He's 10. Mitzi, our "baby," is four months old - a mini schnauzer. She's hopelessly stubborn, very much a pistol.
As for me...at present I spend a lot of time volunteering at my daughters' schools. A LOT of time. In April I was elected president of the PTO, so I guess I'll just move in. :o) Really, though, I enjoy it. Four years ago I took up running, in order to honor a friend who had died by running a marathon with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training. Whatta ya know, I got hooked! I have three marathons and several half marathons under my belt. Running has been a great salvation for this quasi-single parent, oh yes!
Let's see, what else? Future plans. Once Allie heads off to kindergarten, I plan to rejoin the workforce as an elementary Special Ed teacher. I look forward to it, and I dread it, as only a person who hasn't touched a W-4 in 8 years can dread such a thing. Probably more like 10 years, since it will take me a year or so of studying and certification to get my head back in the game. The prospect is daunting, but I know I will rise to the challenge.
For those of you out there who knew my sister, Holly...she is now a charge nurse (med-surg) at Methodist Willowbrook here in Houston. She's married to my husband's brother (!) and has four kids - a girl and three boys. She's a fantastic, competent nurse - I'm so proud of her. And really glad that she's in Houston with me now! Of course, once we decide to move back to Austin, we'll have to cart her family with us...
So that's it - at least, all I can think of at the moment. Sorry about the pedantic nature of it...but that's a "life bio" for you! Hoping to hear from some of my old pals out there...and hoping all of you are doing well. Maybe I'll even see you at the reunion in October! Happy trails!
