Meri's Story

Oh, so many memories from high school! I can't mention them all! All the memories had to keep me going for quite a few years while we lived here and there. I married Tim in 1980, an Army soldier whom I met rollerskating at Tiffanys, and we promptly moved away. Thats Army life for ya! I went from shy, small town girl to riding a subway in a foreign country overnight. Not so shy anymore! We lived in West Berlin, Germany, came home for a visit and had our son James in 1982, then to Tennessee, Kentucky, came home in 1985 to visit and had our daughter Christiana, then on to Recruit in Bellingham, Stuttgart, Germany, Kansas.... and finally home. Tim retired from the army in 93, only for us to start all over again. He did a couple of jobs, but has been at the postal service for quite some time now. I did in-home day care for ten years, took care of my grandparents during their last years, and now work at what used to be 'Racks Drug', now called Chucks Drug. I love my job, especially my customers...most of them anyhow! I have had many jobs. I babysat off on on, sold sewing machines In the PX in Berlin for the Pfaff (German) company. I have been treasurer for girlscouts of Stuttgart Neighborhood, all 11 troops. In Kansas I was a Daisy/Brownie Leader. I sold sewing machines for Pfaff in Stuttgart also. Then I took training to be a certified day care provider and was Certified in STuttgart, Kansas, and wasn't actually certified, but babysat for friends here. At one point I was lunchroom monitor in Kansas. One year when my daughter and her friend got jobs at Crystal Mountain... and they didn't offer the worker bus anymore, I also worked up there on Weekends so I could chauffer them. ( while working at the Drug Store also!) That was nuts. What us parents won't do for our kids! Pretty much my whole life I have been around kids, crafts, and family. I guess it doesn't take much to make me happy! I loved my job as a day care provider, it gave me the opportunity to stay home with my kids. We lived in Stuttgart, Germany at the time of our ten year reunion, and I had a little reunion of my own. I was in line at the money machine at the army base and this guy walked by. I stopped him and asked if he was from Washington?.... yah.... did he go to White River High School?.... yah.... Was he in the class of 79? He finally got a funny look on his face and he asked who I was..... it was Bill Buren. We have alot of memories from our time over there... his family wasn't there yet so he became part of ours. I am pretty domestic.... have not only one sewing machine... I have TWO! I can knit, crochet, make jewelry, I put together a cookbook (I like to cook) I like gardening.... I have a garden sale every April. (Thank goodness for perennials!) I make wine in my spare time, I do jam and can things too, photography is a passion of mine, I paint a little, I have a band saw, drill press, table saw, (And I know how to use them all!) etc... you shoud see the nifty cordless drill I got for Christmas! I am part of a group of mostly ladies that have season Mariner Tickets. We are known as the Section 342 Old Bats. We do spring training in Arizona every year.... thats right around the corner. Its a great group. I also am part of a group of women, N.D.S., that scrapbook, and another group that rubber stamp. Great women, I have learned from them all. This past Dece...Expand for more
mber 14 of my artsy friends and I put together a bazaar.... the Bunkhouse Bazaar. It was a hit. So keep your eyes on the paper next Dec, we will probably be doing it again. However, I can also be found tramping around in the woods looking for Chanterelles mushrooms, or up on some mountain peak picking wild mountain huckleberries. I have been a member of the Ida Marge Orthopedic Guild since I was probably twelve. My mom and grandma were members. Now my daughter is a member also. We do two sales a year and various other activities, all our proceeds go to mary Bridge Childrens Hospital and Health Center in Tacoma. My grandson had surgery there when he was seven months old. Its an awesome place I am also a member of White River Senior Housing. We applied and applied for grants and finally were approved to build 20 income based senior apartements. I am very proud to have been a part of it. Our big event was an auction in April of 2008. We made almost $30,000...... now thats something to be proud of! The housing is finished now and people just moved in over the holidays. I was an active parent while my kids were in school, I was room mother and went on lots of field trips. I enjoyed their baseball, wrestling, ballet, tap, jazz, and was a charter member of the Booster Club for High School Band. Our group took over the concession stands at the Football games and Basketball games. I still support the band, you just may see me working in the concession stand! .... and my most favorite thing to do now... is be a grandma. Our son is 26, not married, and has a good job at the postal service. Our daughter is also not married.... but has a boyfriend that we like alot, and they have given us Ethan.... our Grandson. He was born Sept of 2006 and I have enjoyed absolutly every stage with him... and am looking forward to many more stages! Our latest thing is 'trains'. OH my, going to have to add on another room I think! We are fortunate to get to babysit, and Ethan likes to come to 'Mammy's' to play too. He is pretty spoiled, but more than that he is the neatest, nicest little boy! I am not too proud to say.... I think he is pretty smart too! I enjoy him alot. The hardest part of my life was... several. Being away from 'family' during all our moving. Tim Going to war, in 91 he was in the first Gulf War. And watching my daughter labor. The saddest part was the loss of my brother in 91. Have lost various family members but his was the hardest. For now I have no big plans for the future. Just to be healthy and live clean. I used to think 88 was nice round number... thought I would like to live til I was 88. That was before I hit 44. No way was I ready for my life to be half over! So now am planning to live to be 124. After all our traveling we have settled here in my Grandparents home... its been in the family since it was built in 1900. Lets just say it has 'character'. I would hope you have some memories of me. I would love to hear from all of you! I am afraid I may be remembered for being 'nice.' That is so boring and safe. After re-reading what I just typed (yes, Mr Lozier, I still cannot type worth a damn!) I sound boring even to myself! But its a very satisfying kind of boring! signed, Just Meri if my life was measured by my friends... I am rich! added 8/10.. expect grandson Caleb James the end of September! Can't wait!
