Merna's Story
Well, I've been married to a man 17 years my senior for 38 years, following the end of my marriage to my high-school sweetheart. We both brought two boys into the marriage and they are truly brothers. I have eight grandchildren, whom I adore.
I retired at age 55, and it's the first time I can say I don't mind getting old.
We have traveled to Italy five times, spending a significant amount of time in Tuscany. Our last trip was August 2017 . Anyone need a tour? I could probably give one. Any recommendations on where to stay (or not)? I could probably help there too.
The main thing I regret about my life is not continuing my education after high school. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't have gotten married so young, but rather pursued a good education and seen where that would have taken me.
My pet peeve: poor grammar. So if you find any in this story, please feel free to let me know.
My favorite teacher: Jane Readeur, who taught me proper grammar!! She and I had lunch a few months ago and she looks great, feels great, and just retired a couple of years ago.
What do I plan to do in retirement? Certainly not hang out with my husband. He's an artist and has completely different interests than do I. But we do plan to do some extensive travel while he's still young enough to do so comfortably. Don't get...Expand for more
me wrong, he's in great health (already had that triple bypass surgery so he's probably going to be around for a long time), but the older you get the slower you get.
Other than travel, I would like to find a fun job that doesn't tie me to an 8-5 schedule. I want to work when I want to, not when I have to.
I also plan to do some volunteering, perhaps at a teen pregnancy crisis center. The girls out there need to know that there's a safe alternative to abortion and it's not the end of the earth to tell their parents about the predicament into which they've gotten themselves. I think maybe I could help out in the office, where my skills lie.
Oh, yea, last but certainly not least......you know that church next to MCHS on the corner of Prospect and Artesia (used to be Community Baptist Church, currently Journey of Faith)? Well, in 1984 when I was in a really bad place following my divorce, I found comfort and peace in the arms of Jesus. I sure wish I would have known about Him and His saving grace when I was in the middle of my teens, and my life would have taken a very different route. But I didn't, and I'm glad I did when I did, because life hasn't been the same since. Now, it's not perfect by any stretch, but God is good no matter what my circumstances. Check it out!! journeyoffaith.com.
Love to all,
Merna
