Meta's Story

Life This time of year often makes me reflect on my life and life in general. Another year has gone by and the New Year about to start. What changes are going to take place and will I have the fortitude to face them head on? The answer always seems to be yes. Thank God for that! Over the years I have become rather head strong and very settled in my ways. To counter act this state of mind I have a daughter who never ceases to surprise me. Her facination with rocks and mother nature have led to many of my finer moments! Rock climbing and going on "digs" have taught me that there are somethings you should not do after a certain age! In persuit of her quest for knowledge and to satisfy her professor we embarked on our advanture to the mountains of "Wild and Wonderful West Virginia!" Camping and spending a vast amount of time in the wild is not the way I thought I would spend my leap into middle age. My idea of adventure and roughing it is a hotel without room service and a concierge! Needless to say , when it comes to my daughter I can rarely say no. This brings me back to the beginning of facing a new year. Following my daughter and a group of students I made it to the first and second stage of our climb. This false security was the start of the beginning of the end! I felt a little unsure of my footing turned around too quickly and the next thing I knew I was flying without a plane. My brain processed this news rather quickly and if it was a question of hitting with my teeth or arms it was no choice! Out went my arms and suddenly the dead quiet of this majestic venue was interrupted with the sound of breaking bones! This brought this adventure to an immediate halt and gave us all the new task of finding our vehicle and also finding the nearest Emergency Room! The retired Colonel became ill and thought he was having a heart attack. No problem, I only need one hand to drive! Yes, somehow all of the training and possibly being super Mom kicked in. There was no pain great enough and no emergency that would keep me from my mission. Back roads of West Virginia watch out an injured and determined woman is driving. Being prepared, I just happened to have a map and the nearest road to the hospital mapped out. Within and hour of this unfortunate accident we had arrived and received the most wonderful care. The Colonel was just feeling the stress and I had indeed broken my arm. The other news was that I needed to be in a larger hospital and would need surgery. The final and best news was that the surgery was a success and I would only need to be in the cast for five months. This was an experience that I would not trade for anything in the world. My daughter and I have grown closer than ever and I now realize that there are things you should not do after a cert...Expand for more
ain age! I now select the hotels in the area where we stay for her geological quests and I stay a safe distance from anything that resembles a mountain or fossil! I now feel like a fossil myself and enjoy my part on the sidelines! All this and more make for a year of many changes and wonderful experiences. I never fail to amaze myself at my ability to change and adapt! This is a good omen for next year. We are blessed and thankful for the capacity to realize it. Life is good and I am thankful for every minute of it. Can't wait for the adventures of the upcoming year! My daughter's hobby will take a back seat to her other passion, medicine. This next year will be the start of her medical education and the start of a life time of adventure and great rewards. She too will find that life is good and that nothing is impossible. We are blessed and thankful for the life we have! Look out 2006 here we come ready for the New Year!! ! Wow 2009! Time goes by so quickly!!! Life has flown by and changes are coming. We are about to make the biggest and most drastic change in our lives. We thought that we would be looking at retirement by this age. Our best plans always seem to change and "poof" off we go in another direction! We have been offered a wonderful opportunity in New Zealand! Next year we just might be starting a new life down under. We have become vintage travelers and look for new adventures. This seems to fit the bill plus we will be working and teaching within their health care system. Right now I doubt that we will make this situation permanent but look forward to the challange. It was a hard decission after being offered positions in Bermuda and other exodic places. Will see how "we" adapt and if this is something to do for more than a year. Guess it depends on what our daughter does and where she will live. I don't think I will be able to be that far from her for an extended period of time. She is very excited in this move and may join us. Just can't believe that we are about to do this... at our age! My husband and I don't feel our ages. We don't act our ages either, except when Mother Nature reminds us! Growing older is an adventure. It does beat the alternative. Life is wonderful and we pray that we still have many years to enjoy and to be useful! Big plus on this move is that I will still be able to coach soccer. This sport has taken over my life for the last 10 years! Thanks to my daughter this is the gift that never stops giving to me! Little did I realize when she started to play soccer at age 4 that I would join her. She has gone on with her life, education and lack of free time. Thus, she only plays soccer rarely. I can't play much anymore, U-60!!! Have to get real over this fact and be glad that I still have the ability to coach, train and guide young folks in this great sport. This has kept me young and injured. Wouldn't trade this experience and the wonderful guys and girls on my teams! These kids are amazing and keep me "4 real!"
