Michael's Story
Life
After graduation from San Manuel in 1971, I joined the Navy and went to Viet Nam (WestPac Tour) in 1973, aboard the USS Shasta (AE-33). I was stationed on this ship out of basic training, and was part of the commissioning crew. Upon returning to our home base in Northern California, I married a California girl I met just before I left. I have been married for almost 45 years, and have two daughters, age 43 and 39. The oldest is an Occupational Therapist and the youngest is now a District Manager for Am Trust Insurance. After discharge from the Navy in 1975, I worked for the Department of the Navy for 23 years as a Metals Inspector. Forced into early retirement due to base closure, I remained in Northern California. I am currently a Specialist Quality Engineer for Aerojet Rocketdyne, an Aerospace company, and defense contractor. I am also the Operations Manager of the Non Destructive Testing (NDT) Department. My Wife and I now live in Auburn, a small gold mining community from the gold rush days, close to Sutters Mill in Coloma in the Sierra Nevada Foothills east of Sacramento. We have a beautiful view overlooking the Sacramento Valley. We are 15 minutes from three lakes, and two rivers, and 50 minutes from Sugar Bowl, one o...Expand for more
f my favorite snow ski resorts. I enjoy golf, Kayaking, snow skiing. It's hard to believe it's been 47 years since leaving San Manuel and starting a new life! There are a few things I'd change, if I could, but for the most part... No Way! We have been blessed in so many ways!
Military
In 1973 while preparing to rondevous with a carrier in the Gulf of Tonkin in North Viet Nam, I was in the forward machine shop talking with friends, and the General Quarters alarm sounded. Now, when you are on a fully loaded Amunition ship in a combat zone, and you're called to battle stations, many things race through your mind. I flew out of the machine shop and up to the main deck. As I looked to my right, our Destroyer Escort took off like we were standing still. When she cleared our bow, she opened up with her five inch guns and completely obliterated one of two Viet Kong gun boats. She then heavily damaged the second one. Our Captain was keeping us abreast of the situation. One thing for sure, if they had hit us with torpedos, I would have gone from one bright light into another one. I always loved to see that Destroyer Escort with us. My last year in the Navy I received orders for a Destroyer, and served on board until my separation in 1975.
