Michael's Story

I attended Jackson High in '68 - '72. My favorite classes were History, Art and Drafting. After school I went into the military. (not much choice. I had a lottery number of 19 LOL) Instead of letting the draft determine my future, I enlisted in the Air Force. After bootcamp and training, I ended up in the U.P. of Michigan at K.I. Sawyer AFB. I got out of the service in '76 and returned to Jackson, but the economy was terrible. There were no jobs, nothing going on and the future looked pretty bleak, so I decided to go back in the military. I changed things this time and decided to go into the Navy, where the opportunities for travel were better. I was stationed on the USS Saratoga; an aircraft carrier in Mayport Florida. I made 4 cruises to the Mediterranean, traveled all over Italy, France, Spain and Egypt. When you travel those countries you get a genuine appreciation for what we have here in America, but the opportunity to study history in Europe and Egypt is fantastic. Spending time at Rome, Venice, Pompii, Cairo and the Pyramids at Giza really brings the history of humanity into focus. It was a great time for me. I got out of the...Expand for more
military for good in '79 and just lived life like everyone. I became disabled and unable to work in 2002. This has been a really troubled time. Accepting the fact that you will never work again and that you cannot do all the things you used to is hard, very hard. I try not to let it define my life, but there are days that everything seems somewhat pointless. Friends sort of fade away a few at a time, going on with their lives. It's understandable since you can't get together for golf or tennis or other things friends do. The kids are grown and have lives of their own, so contact with them becomes scarce, with months between calls or visits. Being single myself leaves a lot of time alone, thinking about the past and wishing for better days. But things will be better someday and knowing that, along with my faith, keeps me going. To all the friends from Jackson High, I sincerely hope things are better for you. All my best wishes for your families and future. It seems that when all the past reunions were held, I was out of the country. Hopefully there will be another and I can visit with ya'all. Until then, God bless and keep the faith.
