Michael's Story
I have great memories of Bolivar High School. My parents were divorced in 1957 and I came to Bolivar, Missouri at the age of 9 to live with my Grandmother Ruby McKay. I started Fourth grade at Mitchell Elementary and my teacher was Grace Pursley. She was very nice to me and helped me to fit in with my new classmates. Thomas Ball and I became good friends that year and we have remained friends ever since. After a few years I went to live with my Dad in Arkansas who had just retired from the US Navy, However, in 1963, I moved back to Bolivar and started high school. I was a fairly good athlete and was able to make the Football and track team my freshman year. I also managed to fall in love with Grace Pitts that year although she probably did not know that I was alive. I developed a love for art, thanks to Mrs. Hebbert and got a job at Newland's Dry Cleaners. The Glory Days of high school; football, Friday night dates, and friends like Kenny Divin, Tom Ball, Bobby Black, Jerry and Terry Degraffenreid, Jerry Shelenhamer, Ray Pursley Don Hendrickson, and my dear friend and tennis buddy Derald Joe Hood. And all those beautiful girls that I chased but never caught - Grace Pitts, Myra Buffington, Dianna Duncan, Connie Hutchison, Linda Kukal, Janet Wheeler, Virginia Hughes, and Rosemary Collins. After high school I went to Missouri State University and Married Cheryl Dooley in 1970. Cheryl and I live in Columbia, Missouri and we have been married for 50 years December 6, 2020. Corpus Christi, Texas. Sarah, 43, lives in Mission, Kansas with her two boys, Cameron and Porter, and Emily, 37, lives inRocklin, California with her husband Jeremy Collins and daughter Ivory. Cheryl and I have three wonderful, handsome, and smart grandsons: Seth age 25, Cameron, age 16, and Porter age 14 and one granddaughter, Ivory age 2. Having grandchildren is the greatest gift in life and they have brought Cheryl and me tremendous joy and happiness. I completed a 25 year military career with the US Army in 1996 and then began teaching psychology and sociology classes at Central Methodist University. I am retired now and regret that I never completed my doctorate degree. I turned 72 this last December and it has been 53 years since I graduated from Bolivar High School. It is hard to believe that so many years have passed by and I think back and wish I could some how do them over and be a better person, say the things I should have said and take back all the things a should not have said. I think about all the classmates that are no longer here. Life is a journey with lots of ups and downs and I have come to believe that our purpose here on this earth is to love and care for each other, to look out for one another, to hold hands when we cross the street. We all need each other. So to my classmates I say, "May God grant you always a sunbeam to warm you, a moonbeam to charm you, a sheltering angel so nothing can harm you.
