Michael's Story

Life It's nice to know that not everyone is having a hard time. I was one of the quieter people at the school. I kept to myself and really didn't have much to say. As it turns out I was a late bloomer. In truth our financial situation kept me feeling bad. I came from a single parent home with three other siblings. My mom did the best she could and I understand that. After high school I Joined the service (Marine Corp). It was exciting because I did a lot of traveling (something I did know I liked to do) and met a lot of different people. I stayed in for six years and then came back to Philly after my discharge. In addition I got married during my third year in the Marines. Being back in Philly didn't really work for me with a wife and I wound up getting a divorce and eventually going back into the service for 14 more years. I retired from the Navy in 1997 and have been living in Callifornia ever since. Most on my time in the Navy was spent in California and although I am a Philly native at heart, I have learned to enjoy the weather without snow :'). Also in California is where I met my second wife who is also a Pennsylvaina native. Ironic isn't it? Prior to retiring from the military I managed to make some contacts and work for two companies which would have a big impact on my future. One of which was with a company called Powerw...Expand for more
ave and the other was with a company called QSC audio. Both I found out later make high end electronic equipment. After my millitary retirement I went to work for a company called DirecTV where I am now. I work at the uplink facility where we transmit the signal to the satellite from an earth station. The job is challenging and exciting at the same time. If you would have told me in 1974 that I would be doing this I would have said that you were crazy. School I didn't really enjoy high school as much as I would have liked but I did learn a lot. That was mainly through the excellent education I received in the Magnet program. The teachers in that program really did care about the children and tried to make a difference. I wish I had paid even more attention to what they were saying and applied my self more at the time. It would have made my journey up to this point a little smoother. I was a very quiet introverted person in high school and didn't really become the man I am until after I joined the service and started to see how the "real" world worked. No regrets. College I didn't go to college straight out of high school so my education took longer than what is considered normal. I am happy I continued to persue it to the end though. There is something to be said about the feeling of accomplishment when all is said and done.
