Michael's Story
Got a minute? 20 or 30 minutes? I'm feelin' prolific. I came to Burlington in 1963 from Anacortes. My family arrived in Anacortes in 1957 from California so that my father could help start up the then, Texaco refinery. I went to school in Anacortes through the first half of my third grade. My parents got a divorce when I was eight; divorce was very unpopular at that time. My Mom struggled to raise 3 kids in Anacortes and finally moved to Seattle to get work and away from her acquaintances that didn't look lightly at a divorced woman with 3 children. We kids stayed with Dad who had moved to Burlington and re-married. Along with 2 stepbrothers and a stepsister (Jimmy,Jacqueline and Mark Gatti), we moved into a rented farmhouse just below Peterson road. It was on the farm of Jess Knutzen. Peterson road was just across the field from our house. There were many refinery brat kids for us to play with, the Mainards, the Collins', Beechers, Curt Knutzen's family, the Cowells and the Tullers (not refinery brats, early entrepreneurs), to name a few. Sorry I missed a few, CRS(Can't Remember Shtuff) and all. This whole CREW of kids and more, played in the tall grass of the field between Peterson road and Avon Allen road (the road our house was on), making mazes and playing hide and seek. I met Hal Tuller and his sister Susan here and spent a lot of time playing with them. Summertime, we spent stealing peas from the back of pea trucks that had to stop at the intersection of Avon Allen and Peterson roads, taking long rides on the riding lawn mower and rolling down the hill in the field, inside inner tubes...those were the days! I attended school at West View elementary from the last half of third grade through the first half of fourth grade at which point I moved to White Center, in Seattle, to stay with my Mother and her new husband. Susan tells me now that she was crushed when I left....aww, it's OK to wipe the tears, it's a sad point in the story. It was in White Center that I picked up my passion for motorcycles, at the ripe old age of nine. It started with a 4 hp, horizontal shaft, Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine bolted to a mini-bike frame....oh the FREEDOM! We had a small motorcycle gang, 6 guys with mini-bikes (hey, we were 9 years old)and we rode those things all over the suburban streets, sometimes going 5 or 6 miles from home...unheard of nowadays but that is where the love for 2 wheels, the sounds, the smells and the wind in my face came from. Hope you're not bored....I left White Center after my freshman year, only at the time, I was in a junior high school, so I was really a senior and moved back to Burlington to live with my Father. He was renting a house on Samish Island and I still didn't have a driver's license, I was driving but only on the Island, so I had to take the bus to school. An hour in, in the morning and an hour back, in the afternoon. I couldn't wait to get my license. I used to DRIVE to Edison to catch the early bus to school, to attend driver's training...go figure. Finally got my license. Started buying and trading cars, went thr...Expand for more
ough 17 different vehicles in 4 years (a couple of those were motorcycles...it's in my blood now). Learned a lot about keeping junkers running. Partied a lot during my senior year, lots of keggers, seemed like every weekend, got into some chemical experimentation...often wondered how my car got me home or which road it took to get me there..but somehow managed to survive and graduate. After high school, I did some odd jobs and finally wound up joining the U. S. Air Force. Served in Europe during the cold war, keeping an eye on those Russians. Put in 4 years, got married (the first time) and sired 2 fine boys. Was married for 13 years, got a divorce and was single for 4 years (more motorcycles). In 1993, after 4 years of singleness, I asked Susie Tuller to accompany me to a BEHS/MVHS football game. She accepted and we were married in March of 1994. Our little families of 3 grew to 6...4 boys...oh well, with boys, you only have to worry about one, with girls, you have to worry about ALL the boys! We've been married (I better get this right) 15 years, this coming March. I'm a mathematician. All the boys have grown and left the nest and now in our Golden years, we bought a, guess what...motorcycle! We both enjoy riding...we're not Bikers, we're ENTHUSIASTS! We are fair weather riders and get out when ever we can. I've made the Cascade Loop run twice (it's a bit long for Sue, six hours on a motorcycle is only for the stout of rearend). For those of you interested, DO NOT take the Loop, westbound over Highway 2, through Leavenworth, over Stevens Pass, in the afternoon....the traffic backup beginning in Sultan through Monroe will sorely test your patience and clutch hand, if you're on 2 wheels. Go eastbound, over 2, in the morning and take the Northcross Highway (20), westbound, in the afternoon, much less traffic! Dang!...my fingers are getting sore...I haven't typed this much since high school typing class, using the highly sophisticated, state of the art, IBM Selectric. If you are still with me, after this grueling rant, I'll wrap this up with where I'm at now. Married, to my lovely wife Susan; my favorite music...the Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynard, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Seger, John Denver (where did that come from?), AC/DC, Blind Faith, Cream, Mountain, Youngbloods, Marvin Gaye, to name a small few...my tastes are very varied. I am an electronic toy freak. I have been playing with computers since Jungle Jim Forbes' electronics class in high school. We are currently using a wireless network with laptops, in home, have a Tom Tom GPS in the car, to help us get where we're going and oh yes, did I tell you, we have a motorcycle....bye for now
December 31st..lost my job due to lack of work, no, not me, I was working but there wasn't any work to do. Oh well, next weekend, Susan and I are moving to Spokane to start a new life on the dry/snowy side versus the damp/wet side. We are excited! We are going to purchase a 10 acre farm and as soon as we can get it financed, you're all invited over for campfires and beer! Hope you can make it.
