Michael's Story

My life has taken me on a roller coaster ride. I have two wonderful daughters from a previous marriage that I raised and live with me full time. I have a wonderful wife who shares many interests and goals with me. Together we own a fairly new house sitting on 50 acres of land in the Finger Lakes, nestled in the Bristol Hills. I spend my time hunting, fishing, planting trees on my property, and enjoying the outdoors. In the fall I hunt deer, coyote, and fox, but it is the coyotes that really have my interest. As far as the trees go, I started this about 4 years ago. The first year I planted 500 trees, 750 the second year, about 600 the third year, and 1700 this past year. It helps to have a tractor with a 3-point hitch and the large implements to prep the ground for the trees. I don't think most people would have ever guessed this was me back in high school. My oldest daughter just graduated from High School with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors. She is attending a community college now...Expand for more
and will be transfering to SUNY Geneseo in January. Her Senior year wrapped up nicely as she was voted Prom Queen and won a scholarship from a local bank. My youngest is a sophmore in High School and is very active in student government this year. She has also loaded up her schedule with AP courses and is doing very well so far. Although both my daughters have hunting licenses, only my youngest had any interest in actually going. Because of the changes in the laws, my youngest will be going deer hunting with me this year. It's probably be more like a walk in the back yard I think. I am looking into eventually getting a wind generator, but because of rapidly rising heating fuel costs I have to pause and do what makes financial sense so I am installing a coal boiler to reduce my heating bills. This step will reduce my heating costs by almost 75% or more. It is not like the old days, this model is automatic feed and runs like most furnaces. I will have to fill the hopper once or twice a week, but it is still easier and cheaper than wood.
