Michael's Story
Short synopsis: The last 20 years have been filled with many adventures. In 1987 I moved to and lived in downtown SLC for 10 years, was involved in the underground / punk scene for several years prior to starting college at the U. in 1991, and then spent 6 years there getting a degree in German. During the middle of college I went to Germany for a year to study in Heidelberg and really fell in love in with the honesty, pragmatism, and down-to-earth culture - they really seem to have sorted out their priorities and put the emphasis on what's right for people. extended period) that Utah was a bit too provincial and 'small pond' for my tastes.
The Seattle chapter of my life started with doing two years of AmeriCorps national service, which was a great experience. The second year provided an unusual segue into a paid tech job with Speakeasy Network, the major funder of the technology access non-profit I worked with in my second AmeriCorps year. I worked at Speakeasy for two years, then handled a layoff by starting my own technology consulting business in 2001. Most recently I've transitioned away from that and back into formal, enterprise-level employment.
