Michael's Story

Hello Former Classmates; After Graduating from Oakhaven in 1985, I joined the U.S. Navy in August of 1985. I attended boot-camp in Great Lakes, Ill. and then went on to Boiler Technician (A) school, also in Great Lakes at RTC. After school, In May of 1986, I was shipped to Mayport, Fl and stationed aboard the Aircraft Carrier, USS Saratoga. After a Med. Cruise in 1987; The Saratoga was sent to Portsmouth, VA. for a Shipyard Overhaul at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in January of 1988. I met Michelle Faulks in February and 14 Months later, in April of 1989, we were married. In November of 1989, and being promoted to the Rank of E-5, I recieved orders to the USS John F. Kennedy. During my 2 years on board, I was a vital member of the ship's Automatic Boiler Control Shop, and the only African-American assigned to the shop. I also became BTOW (Boiler Technician of the Watch)Qualified, and again, was the only African-American to stand this watchstation aboard the ship; as well as part of the crew, that was sent to the Persian Gulf, and served time onboard, during Operation Desert Shield/Storm & the Gulf War. After 2 Years and a lot of accomplishments aboard the Kennedy;I was given orders to SIMA (Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity) Mayport, Fl. which was great Duty; but after a year, went back to SIMA Norfolk and served out my time there, until, November of 1994. On May 31st, 1995; My wife and I had our 1st child; a little girl, after 4 failed attempts at pregnancy, which included an 8 month stillbirth in April of 1994. Later that year, in November of 1994; I then recieved orders to the Destroyer Tender, USS Puget Sound, also home-ported in Norfolk, VA. which I served my final 14 months in the Navy, being Honorably Discharged in January, 1996. I then started selling cars at a Chevy Dealership in Chesapeake, VA; only 3 days after getting out of the Navy. In only my 4th month, in May of 1996, I sold 21 cars and won Salesperson of the Month. Over the next 19 months, I would go on to win Salesperson of the Month, another 9 Times, to garner; Salesperson of the Year Honors for 1997; which also included my son being born on January 10th, that same year. In 1998, I wanted a new career path, as I desired Management. Without a college degree or any p...Expand for more
rior banking experience; I applied and was hired as a Branch Manager for a major bank. As my sales background would have it, I led the Oyster Point Branch, to achieve sales goal, after sales goal during my 19 months of employment; and was recruited by one of the largest Car Dealerships in the area, to work as a Finance Manager, in August of 2000. Since my hire date with the company, I have broken countless of Sales and Finance Records, as my employment continues. As of April 20th, 2010; my wife and I have just celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary and reside in Chesapeake, VA. As you can tell I am very proud to tell my story, as I graduated number 78 out of 82 graduates from Oakhaven High School in 1985. I just never had the time and/or was just too tired to study and/or do assignments, thanks to having to work through high school, to support my family and the the sexual abuse I endured as a child, at the hands of my father, and the foster care because of that abuse. I kept it all to myself, and endured it all, while attending 7 different junior high and high schools, on my way to graduation. You can read all about it in my just released Autobiography, "A Father's Double Life." which is available on AMAZON.COM OR BARNES AND NOBLE.COM My daughter Briana is a graduate of Norfolk State University (December 2017). My son Brian is attending Delaware State on a Football Scholarship, and in 2018, was a 1st Team All MEAC selection at Linebacker and moves into his senior year from the 2019 campaign. You can also check out my profile on Facebook -- Michael Cavicante and become my friend:)----take care MORE ABOUT ME; If I won $100 million, I'd give $20 million of it to Churches and Charity, then spend the rest on My Mother, My Sister and My wife and kids. My aspirations are still; to write a best selling book, a grammy award winning song, and to write an award winning screenplay....All three, of which I am currently working on. My first job was at The Commercial Appeal, where I got paid $3.35/hr to work in the mailroom. What I remember most about it is working from 8pm-5am on most school nights, through high school. I have earned a 6-digit income since 2000 and currently serve as a General Sales Manager for Steven Nissan in Harrisonburg, VA
