Michael's Story

After graduating from PBGHS in 06/1972 I really had no clear idea what I was going to do with my life. I had a 2 year scholarship to college, and started attending PBJC in the fall of 1972 because I felt that was what I was supposed to do. Wrong! I was not "college-ready"...or perhaps college was not ready for me!?! Before the end of my first semester I withdrew from all of my classes and started talking to military recruiters. The Army offered me the best opportunity, so I signed up and in Jan 1973 was off to Ft Jackson, SC (the redneck capital of the world) for my basic training. That was a major reality check for this ex-New Yorker and full time party animal. I survived that indoctrination and went on to have a great experience in the Army. I spent 3 of my 4 year enlistment stationed in West Germany. Autobahns and beerfests, baby...that's what I'm talking about! I came home in Feb 1974 on leave and married my high school sweetheart (Sue Jamieson, Riveria Beach HS class of '73). I took her back to Germany with me. We had a great time travelling all over Europe with "Army buddy" friends. Those are memories we will never forget. Sue and I celebrated our 38th anniversary on Feb 9 2012...Holy cow! Not only has she put up with me for all those years, she has also blessed me with two beautiful daughters, now age 32 and 34. After leaving the Army in July 197...Expand for more
7, I returned to the West Palm Beach area and went to work for the post office. I gradually climbed the ladder there from clerk to manager of accounting and reporting systems, but was unhappy with the "corporate culture" that existed at the post office, and was looking for another career. In Jan 1986 the Prudential Insurance Company recruited me away from the post office and into a career in insurance and financial services. Although things went reasonably well for me I never really fell in love with the insurance industry. I yearned to return to a career where I could be of service to others and have a decent retirement/benefits package. I Found a perfect match when I started working for the Social Security Administration in 1992. I have worked my way through many positions with SSA, and am currently a Technical Expert working in a field office in Margate, FL. The job is very demanding, but I love the challange of handling the most difficult cases as well as teaching and training others. I tell my coworkers I'm not leaving that job until they carry me out on a stretcher!! Sue and I live in Boca Raton, FL...and to think how I used to make fun of all the "snotty ex-New York Italians and Jews" that live here. Hey, now I am one of them. Oy-vey!! Life has been good for us. No big lotto wins yet, but we have our health and our sanity...and no gray hair yet!!
