Michael's Story
Life
My Spouse
I met my wife when I was in the US Army stationed in Georgia. We attended the same church.
My Pets
My cat is named "Sir Thomas More" after the historical figure. I don't know why I named him that.
My Job
I work for Washington state government, in the Office of Financial Management. I'm a computer programmer!
School
I came to Pacifica out of Los Alamitos and Chapman Intermediate Schools, and pretty much the same gang of kids were at those two schools and at Pacifica when I was there. I was at Pacifica for 9th and most of 10th grade, then my family moved to Toronto, Canada due to my father's work. I was on the Water Polo and the Chess teams, but mainly was pretty quiet. I never attended any dances or similar social events, so I was one of those "nobodies". It was OK, I had a few good friends and that was enough.
One of my favorite teachers was Gretchen Grashuis (sp?), a very young English teacher. I remember she had a "thing" for the actor Troy Donohue. My favorite class was Electronics, and the main teacher there was Mr. Van. Van Something, but he had us call him just Mr. Van. I also enjoyed Latin in 9th grade, but only the part about Roman history --- I got an "F" for the year! That's OK, in 10th grade in Canada I reformed myself and got A's in Latin two years running. So, I could do it if I wanted --- I just didn't want to in 9th grade!
Workplace
My last career (so far) is programming computers for the State of Washington. I've spent about 20 years doing that. I program for the Microsoft Windows environment using .NET Framework and the C# programming language. But I've written more programs in COBOL for the IBM mainframe than anything else. Glad I don't have to do it any more, though!
I might get into writing for a living, if I can finish that darned book I've been working on for so long!
Military

niversity, but was running out of money (with no prospects for a scholarship), so I joined the US Army. I had always wanted to join the Army anyway, so it wasn't as bad as it sounds. I found the Army suitable enough that I stayed in for 8 years before deciding that that was enough.
Went to Basic Training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, then Advanced Infantry Training at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. This post has a nickname among the troops, Ft. Puke, Lousy-ana, and it definitely lived up to it. But for the most part I enjoyed all this military training; my specialty was Infantry Mortars. I ended up after 4 months of training in the best physical shape I had ever been in, before or since.
After training I was stationed at Ft Lewis, Washington state, with the 9th Infantry Division (2nd Battalion 39th Infantry Regiment), but after two years I transferred into the Field Artillery. A few months before the end of my first "hitch" I decided to re-enlist in a more technical occupation, and went into the Signal Corps as a microwave communications equipment repairer. This required an entire year's worth of training at Ft. Gordon, Georgia. While I was at Gordon I met my wife, Val.
Upon graduation from Signal School I was stationed in Germany, coincidently in my wife's old hometown in Ulm! Her mother was still living there, even! So, it was like coming home to a place you had never been before, sort of. We spent 3 years in Germany, but at the end of that hitch we decided not to continue in the Army, but to settle down. Since I had liked my tour in Washington state so much, we ended up moving there after my discharge.
I left the Army as a Sergeant (E-5). For whatever reason, during my tour of duty I was never called upon to actually serve in combat, although some of my old buddies who stayed in participated in the invasion of Grenada. If I had stayed in long enough to retire, I might have participated in the first Gulf War.
