Michael's Story

I started school in the Catholic school system, OLBD, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, in North Philly, under the St. Joseph nuns, 1951. Parents broke up about 1956 and all of my brothers, Bip and Butch were sent to St Johns Orphan Asylum at 47th and Walusing Ave Philly. Bip and I reached ages 11 and 12 and were transferred to Saint Francis in Bensalem pa. We both attended Father Judge until our mother got us out in the winter of 1964. Bip and I left St Francis and attended Roman Catholic for a few months and we both dropped out and graduated from Simon Gratz H.S. After graduation I entered into the US Army and became a Nike Hercules Missile Equipment Repairman. I served 2years in Germany and 6 months in Korea at a Hawk missile battery. After mustering out of the Army I continued working as a 62C20 Missile equipment repairer as a civilian at a much better pay rate. The missiles became obsolete in 1972 and I went and drove for Grey Hound Lines East out if Philly. Fast forward about six years and I found I missed the Tech field and got a job with Clayton Mfg. working on dynamometer equipment, auto analyzers, steam boilers and compressors. About in the late 1979’s I moved to West Virginia and utilized my nuke background, from the Nike Hercules missile and started doing Nucl...Expand for more
ear Refueling at various nuke plants in Virginia and West Virgina. Remaking for 14 years in West Virginia i became a licensed Water Plant Operator. Leaving West Virginia i returned to the Philly area and started working as a Sewer plant operator and mechanic for a few years. I left and became a Construction foreman for Robert B Chavous Inc. and did commercial and residential construction with an emphasis on Historical Restoration and Renovation. Much of our work was done at Valley Forge National Park, and at various military bases and instillations. My family and i moved to Redondo Beach Cal and I worked again as Construction fireman for Wm Klopfeld restoring homes after the North Ridge Quake. My last 12 years prior to my retiring I worked as a cross merchandiser for Home Depot and my last two years I taught a tiling class out of the Downingtown Pa store. Retired now I volunteer as a Mentor for Veterans in Lancaster County Veterans Court, I also participate at Veterans funeral services as an Honor Guard, for the Flag golfing ceremony, and 15 Vietnam Veterans go to many of the Lancaster County High Schools and some Middle Schools with a few hundred Vietnam Artifacts and speak to as many as 800 students giving our, “ Living Vietnam History,” seminars. Everyone, “ BE BLESSED!”
