Michael's Story
I'm a native-born Texan. My dad was a commercial artist for a large Defense contractor. I may have caught a bit of the ¿bug¿ for contributing to real-world projects from him. I took drafting in high school and attended UTA to study Engineering. I transferred to the school of Architecture because I felt that it was more "creative". At that time, an Architectural degree had just become a 7 year program. I discovered after three years in the program that architects as a whole are the most under-paid professionals. Most architectural graduates work as draftsmen on other architect's offices. I felt that I didn't need to invest 4 more years of tuition and time to work as a draftsman, as I could do that already.
I took a job as a draftsman with ITE (now part of Siemens). I worked there for 5 years before taking a job with the consulting engineering firm of Purdy-McGuire. There I worked my way up from draftsman to design draftsman to designer.
I took a higher-paying design position with Walter Cash and Partners, which after some length of time went out of business.
I worked as a contract designer for about 7 years for a number of companies including Texas Instruments, Frito-Lay, Alcon Laboratories, and Hercules Aerospace.
I took a "direct" position with a Boeing Facilities program supporting a defense-related facility located in Australia. I worked in this program for over 12 years until the government contract was lost in a competitive bid with Lockheed.
On closure of the program, I took a job with the engineering firm of Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam (LAN). I worked on many projects while there, the primary one being the design of for the rework of Houston's Hobby...Expand for more
airport.
on leaving LAN, I was hired by Meinhard USA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Meinhard International (an Australian-based engineering corporation). I worked there for approximately 9 months before being let go for purely economic reasons. I hope to be re-employed there if the economy improves and I have not taken a position elsewhere.
If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have mutual respect, a culture of honesty, and the time and tools to be able to deal with the day-to-day.
One of the biggest suprises in my life so far has been that the majority of my career has been related to the military in some way. When I was in college I swore that I'd never have anything to do with the military. Do you know how to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans!
If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the roof and ceilings and add on a storm shelter. My dream home would be somewhere in Australia.
If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to the Church that I attend, then spend the rest on a generous retirement, travel and various charities. The main charity I'd like to see would be one to help the poor people of Jamaca. As a tourist Jamaca looks to be an Eden, but for people out side the tourist enclaves it's closser to Hell. I have a lot of ideas on what I'd like to accomplish, but this isn't the place to go into it.
My current age is 58. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be on the moon ar mars. I was so completely wrong of course.
My best friend would tell you I'm very introverted, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as confident.
I share my home with nobody, not even a cat, which I find restful, if a bit lonely.
