Michael's Story

Hello all. After high School I had a few short term jobs. I decided ti Attend the Community College of Beaver County. that was just forming in Freedom.i enrolled in there Business Adminstration Program. I attended Class until Mid December,. During that time. I found myself wanting to do something else. So during Chritmas Break. I enlisted in the Navy for 4 years. I took all the tests. And was formly sworned in om January 27 1970. I was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Boot Camo. north of Chicago. for 13 weeks of Training. As most of you know. I amnot And wasnn't the atheltic type. But I found myself enjoying the experience. though Chicaho in Winter was the pitts.So I grduated Boot Camp. And was sent to ttHe Naval training School to become a Hosital Corepsmen. Again I sent back to Great Lakes. this time Across the Road Boot Camp. I was there for 13 weeks. Where I learned to take care of Patients. Dress wounds, Take Tempatures, Takr Blood. In short just about anything a Regeristed Nurse on the outside would Do. My firt Duty station. Was a Year at the Phildelphia Naval Hospital. Were I put my training to good use. We were still fighting in Vietnam. And the Philly Hospital. Had a large group of Men. mosyly Marines, Army And Airforce. young men to haD Lost legs, some were double Amputes. I got to know alot of great young guys. So then I was sent to Bainbridge, Maryland. It Naval schools. and the Boot NavyCamp for Women. Again I was there for a year. there I was assigned to do office work. then Was moved to work in the eye Clinic. So for two years I was statyioned within Driving Distance of Home. So before I was assigned another stateside duty station. I decided to try for something furthur from Home. I ended up B...Expand for more
eing Assigned to the Naval Support Hospital in Naples, Italy. Were I lived for two years. I enjoyed the experience. Very Much. Down the street from the Hosiptal. Was the ruins of an old Roman Bath complex. I traveled around Naples. exploring the city And the Area. I lived off Base in the local Community. Used Public Transportation, Buses & Trains, boats etc. I found that Italian food in italy. Is sooo much better, than here. Especially the pizza. I made many Italian Friends. became able to make myself understood in Italian. And could make myself understood to. So for two years. I explored all areas of Italy. Rome, Florence, Venice. And so many other small towns up and down the boot. I have vacationed in Greece, Switzerland, France. Germany. in short most of the countries in Europe. I have seen some of the grat works of Art. Acient Roman cities. After my enlistment was up. I decided not to renlist. I came home. did some jobs. then went to a Business School in New Castle. I finally had a job in Beaver Falls. I was the Office Manager, in and Outdoor Sales Manager. they mfg. steel forms rhat hold the concrete in place at Service stationsa. that the gas pumps sit on. We sould forms in all 50 states. And the cribbean. I worked there for 21 Years. then I had a Stroke in December of 2000. I was in the Hospital in December. then rehab in January. I was finally re;eased in February of 2001. I lost the use of my motor functions, on my left side. I now need a brace on my Left Leg to walk. Icannot use my left arm or hand. I am luckly the I still have use of my right hand.And side. While I manage pretty good now. I get around. Am able to dress myself. And can pretty much take care of myself. Will update this at times.
