Michael's Story

Life How did I end up in Jacksonville, Florida? Well, I retired here from the Navy in 1994 after transferring from Italy in 1991. After receiving a choice of locations to transfer to here in the states, I decided Mayport, FL was a decent choice. I thought Norfolk, my other choice, may be a bit tough for 10000 Electronics Technicians to find a job. That is one BIG Navy town! I landed a job here when I retired in 1994, and have not changed jobs since. I spent 20 years in the Navy and now 13 years at a civilian contractor job at the Naval Air Station to support the P-3 flight trainers. I work with a bunch of Engineers and Programmers, although I'm neither, but I run all their mainframe computers and PCs, all the networks, hardware and software. I make sure their computers are working so they can use them to write software and make hardware changes to the flight trainers. I have several mainframes and about 50 PCs in three networks. I'm now going to school to learn Cisco routers, in case I want to change jobs and work exclusively in networking. I finished an AS degree in Electronics Engineering, and this degree should be an AS in Computer Engineering. I have been married for 26 years, almost 27. I have three kids- 2 boys (25 and 21) and a girl. The girl is 9, and is my challenge in life right now. She's also my joy, but what a fun couple of years I'm about to have! She is my sweetie, though, and we go everywhere together. Biking, fishing, swimming. My wife says Jessica's a handful, but they get along great. I met Corinne, my wife, in Italy when I was first stationed there in 1979. Her mom is Italian and father is American, so she's half-and-half. She speaks Italian and English perfectly, and after spending 8 years in Italy altogether, I claim to speak Italian fluently. Corinne says BS t...Expand for more
o that. But I've forgotten a lot of it since I've been gone for so long. I'm pretty involved in our church, and my life has closely aligned itself to a Christian way of life. How can a cursing, drunken sailor turn into a prude? I don't know. Stranger things have happened, I guess. A good friend recently passed away. She was a 90-year old lady friend who was my "church buddy". Her name was Erika. I get comfort from my church and church-friends and other buddies, but the void of Erika's loss hasn't been filled yet. Having an older person for a friend is a bit unusual, but I can say that I learned long ago that if you keep your mouth shut and ears open, you can learn a lot about life and living from older folks. She said the greatest curse is living to be old because you outlive all your other friends and become very lonely indeed. I was her only remaining friend. And she attended church not because she believed in God, but because she was so lonely and had no one to talk to. It gave her peace and comfort to be around nice and caring people. Pet peeve and one piece of advice- Never say "I can't , because...", and never be afraid to ask questions- ask lots of questions, always. So, I've been to a few countries, met a few really great people, married a good woman 27 years ago, had three wonderful kids and had a few bad experiences and a lot of good ones in raising them. I learned electronics and computers, and then learned the greatest lessons in life- from the Bible and from older friends.
