Michael's Story
after phs i went to duquesne u. and graduated in 1969. i married shirley wind on 6/7/69 and she is still my bride. we have 2 children, ryan--36yrs. old and married to a girl from costa rica. nicole--33 yrs. old and married to a guy she met in high school, but not her school.
after college i went to work for kaufmanns(remember when cities had locally owned stores?) i became a buyer at kaufmanns and then joined macy's in kansas city as a store manager, and then a merchandise administrator for furniture and floor covering. in 1978, we moved to dayton ohio, and i joined federated dept stores(they own macy's today) as a vp/store manager. in 1982 we moved to cincinnati ohio(tough placed for a steeler fan to live, but i went to every game and took a lot of sh-t from neighbors and friends. it was great because we typically killed the bungels(not mis spelled). i became a vp/director of stores. in 1990 we moved to lancaster pa and i joined a local and gro...Expand for more
wing store group called bon ton, again as director of stores.
my goal was to retire at 55, and i did. the department store industry is a place for young people. you work a lot of hours and i was traveling 50% of the time.
today, my bride and i live in elizabethtown pa as empty nesters. both ryan and nicole have moved back to Lancaster county from philly and nyc and we all live within 20 minutes of each other. ryan and esther have a 2 yr. old daughter and a 4 month old son. Nicole and john have a 1 yr. old daughter. being close to our kids and grandkids is a joy and blessing beyond compare. life just keeps getting better and we thank the lord for his many blessings.
i often think of the simple days living on the north side, going to perry, and the fun that it was. i also think about how easy it would have been to go to ball games, if the stadiums had been on w. gen. robinson st.
