Michael's Story
Life
Hello fellow classmates!
It's pretty unbelievable how time has gone by. It seems like an eternity and yet it seems like yesterday.
After 5 years at the University of Oregon (what a great
place!) I moved to Los Angeles area where my family
had migrated over the years.
I came out with a mistaken belief that I knew everything there was to know about architecture! Whoa!!...was that
a wrong assumption!! I was hired into my first job in an architectural office as an aspiring designer.....however they needed a blue-print boy!!! A humbling entry in deed!
One of the associates, realizing my desire to design, sat me down one day and asked me to come up with different solutions to a bathroom layout for a tract house. No sweat I say...yet I distinctly remember staring at this, with piled up crinkled sketch paper, and could not in my life come up with ANYTHING.......
I remember him returning and in minutes....voila...had several designs layed out.
I can tell you this was my wakeup call. I came to realize that 5 years of college gave me great experience in philosophizing and theorizing, but virtually no experience in the real world. Rather, what I was given was an opportunity to look over the shoulder of some great designers and LEARN.

the mid 70's I chased my dreams to Hawaii where I lived in Honolulu and worked in Hawaii Kai for three years. I had little personal possesions. But I had
my bicycle. My girlfriend and I rode quite a bit of the Island. I never mastered the surf board but loved to
body surf at Sandy Beach.
A job offer eventually brought me back to LA area.
I worked in four architectural offices that allowed
me to grow in experience. I opened my own office
in 1983. Knock on wood, it is still around.
Guys, I've never been married, but more recently have
given up a lengthy relationship. We still are the best of friends. I feel blessed that I've lived out my
dreams and aspirations. Success is always that carrot
stick held out in front of me.
Today I live in a loft downtown Long Beach, CA. It is
a wonderful living environment and absolutely the very
best of neighbors.
It's been a great and sometimes overwhelming ride through life. I feel like a spawning salmon and a
strong desire to head back to Klamath. Google earth
is a quick fix!!!
I have a website that, although not updated, has some
of my projects. "michaeldouglassdesign.com
To my friends and fellow classmates I offer you well
wishes. It's great to see so many familiar names!
