Michael's Story

Funny how things work. It wasn't two weeks after I graduated from Colfax that I packed up my little Datsun and took off for LA to work for the summer before starting college at Loyola Marymount and studying Engineering. It was great and I really enjoyed Loyola, where I made a most of my lifelong friends, and learned the tools and skills to be a Mechanical Engineer. I don't regret a second of it! I married Teresa Aguilar, who was also a Mechanical Engineering student at Loyola and we've been together since. We moved to Tempe Arizona where I still work at AirResearch/Garrett/Alllied Signal/Honeywell, now as an Engineering Manager in the Advanced Technology group. I got an MBA at ASU back in 1999. For years I had worked in fear of MBA's and the dumb things they drove the company to do, then I became one, and understood. They really were Idiots, so much for that. Terry and I raised 2 kids; Roxanna graduated with a degree in Filmmaking at ASU and Chris, is a talented musician, Is working towards becoming a teacher. In the years intervening, I've enjoyed Arizona immensely. It really is a great place to live, with lots of history, geology, and geography. Desert in the south and mountains in the north and east. Weather is great most of the time with visibility often over 1...Expand for more
00 miles. I used to fly, but gave that up in the mid 80s and took up sailing. Phoenix has one of the most active Yacht clubs in the Southwest, with active racing programs on two lakes. I did some small boat racing in 15 ft to 32 ft class yachts in Arizona and along the west coast. One year, back before the kids got very old, We came in 3rd in the Coronado 15 Nationals; my crew and I were pretty good in heavy air, and led the regatta until the last day, when we let a couple crews who were better in waves with light wind sneak past us. No matter how much you think you know, there always seems to be someone who can still teach you a lesson. That being said, I love the outdoors and everything in it. I had enjoyed skiing, a holdover from my days in the Colfax Ski Club, though I haven't done much in the last couple of years. More recently I've been a Boy Scout Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster and really enjoy backpacking. A couple of years ago I went with our troop to Philmont for a two week, 80 mile trek in northern New Mexico. It was hard, but fun. I'm planning to retire in a couple years. When I do, I'm looking on moving back to Grass Valley. After almost 40 years being gone, I'm not so sure what to expect. They say you can't go home, but we'll see what happens.
