Sabra's Story
Life
After Wakefield, I decided not to go to college because school was not my "thing". I immediately started to work at T-Systems in Crystal City as a Receptionist and worked there for a little over a year. I then worked at the Key Bridge Marriott as a Sales Department Secretary. I found that I preferred to work one on one with people and wanted to make more money - so naturally I became a waitress for the same hotel -- had a great time!
During that time I met my future husband Mike Flaherty. He was an instructor for my civilian Fife and Drum Corps (he was a drummer in the Army's Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps). We dated for 6 weeks and became engaged in Sept. of '82. Mike and I were married on April 9, 1983 (and are still married).
We moved to Orlando, FL for a short period of time so that Mike could attend UCF. We lived in a 2 room apt. and I worked at Traylor Chemical Company as their receptionist. Meanwhile, the Army wanted him back, so back we went back to VA.
We lived in Chantilly, VA in 1984 and I worked as an Engineering Admin. Assistant/Accounts Payable Assistanct for SCS Engineers in Reston, VA. We moved to Arlington in 1988. I left SCS in 1989. By then we had 2 sons Joseph (1987) and Kyle (1989).
I then worked for Early Years Enhancement Services (a pre-school)as an aide (I was able to take the boys with me) and took classes at NOVA to become a pre-school teacher, which I becam...Expand for more
e in 1991.
We moved to Ft. McNair in Washington,DC in 1991, and daughter Hannah arrived in 1992. In 1993 I learned how to be a pro. DJ and started my own business "Music By Sabra". I play for weddings, parties and clubs. It is one of my favorite things to do and I'm still going strong!
We moved back to Arlington and bought a house in the old "hood" in '95. I started working for the International Safety Equipment Assoc. in Rosslyn in 1996 as an assistant and worked my way up to meeting planner. (Still there).
I love to be creative and got into the art of rubber stamping and decided to become a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator in 2002 showing people how to rubber stamp at home workshops - I love it!
My other activities include volunteering at St. Charles Church and my kids schools, and I am a Girl Scout Assist. Leader for a Jr. troop - love those cookies!
My husband has retired from the Army in May and has gone back to school to get his Masters from GWU. It is a year long program to get his masters in education. He teaches children with emotional problems during the day as an intern and goes to school 4 nights a week. SO, this has been a very challenging year so far -- but only one more semester to go -- I am proud of him. He still manages to do his gigs with his band - lots of energy there!
I would love to hear from all of you drop me a line and let me know what you have been up to.
Hugs - Sabra
