Michael's Story

I was probably known in High School as a musician. I continued that in college, at both USC and Cal State Los Angeles, where I majored in music composition. At Cal State LA I led the Jazz Band and Pep Band and was the first undergraduate to get a degree in composition. I was also active during college playing Hollywood recording sessions, most notably for Hanna Barbera cartoons, shows like "The Perils of Penelope Pitstop", "Dastardly and Muttly", and the original "Scooby Doo". I then got the chance to write music on a couple others, "The Harlem Globetrotters" and Josey and the "Pussy Cats". After College, or rather, while working on my masters, I was offered a job at ABC Television, in their Guest Services department, and took it. And thanks to that job, I got the opportunity to write music for the "Merv Griffin Show" (1974-75). At the same time I had my own 20-piece big band that played all around the LA area. I moved out of playing music into writing, then producing, and in the late 70's to early 80's produced records for my own company, Powerhouse Productions. But the "business" of music was not what I liked, and eventually got out of it. All the while I was still working at ABC TV, where I worked on shows like "Happy Days", "Laverne and Shirley", "Barney Miller", "Let's Make A Deal", "Family Feud" and "Welcome Back Kotter". But my main shows were the Academy Awards and the Emmy Awards. Fast forward to 1997, and Disney has bought ABC and is slmming down the company, and my department gets axed. The next week the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hires me as a supervisor on the Academy Awards...Expand for more
and to bring my entire staff with me. And the TV Academy did the same. As of last month (Feb 08) I have worked on 33 consecutive Academy Awards and 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, and have a staff of about 55 people. I'm mainly responsible for the logistical planning for all the star movements on the shows...who has to be backstage when, who takes them, who goes to press and for how long, when to take them off the Red Carpet, that kind of thing. I've had my personal brushes with the biggest stars in Hollywood, but mostly I let me staff take care of them. And if you've heard about Seat Fillers on awards show, I'm also in charge of them on both shows, as well as getting all the people for the Red Carpet Bleachers for the Emmy Awards. It's all a lot of fun. And I havent' forgotten about the music. Or rather, the music hasn't forgotten me. While I'm not currently composing, I still get performances around the world of my most famous piece, originally composed back when I was 19, "Dreams of a Psychopath", for concert band. Nearly 40 years later it's still being played, most recently at the University of New Hampshire and San Jose State, and in a couple months down at Morro Bay. It was also recorded by a band in Switzerland. I split my time between Los Angeles and San Jose, where my mother still lives, and needs help in her aging years. No mention yet of family or relationships. Never married. Too wrapped up in work? Probably more committment phobic. Had my chance 25 years ago with the woman I "should" have married, classmate Gene Gilluly's sister Evelyn (class of '69). But we've remained friends thru the years.
