Michael's Story
As many of you witnessed at graduation, I was pretty beat up. I won't elaborate on what happened to me except to say that the incident led to my breakup with Evelyn, my steady girlfriend all through HS.
I left behind the old neighborhood for a new experience at Philadelphia College of Art, now UArts.
Graduated from the Film department in '74, and had a job waiting at Vanguard School in Haverford. There I used video to show kids the world of work. Next I went to work for Action News, shooting film, and later using the first generation of ENG gear. I did the very first LIVE TV News shot in the 4th market, the first helicopter LIVE shot, and had a solid introduction to TV journalism.
I married a reporter, Judi Bloom in 1977, and we moved to Los Angeles the following year. I worked on non-union features for a few years, did other freelance stuff, wrote screenplays, edited video, etc...and got a divorce before returning to News. I spent 9 years at KCBS-TV, my combat duty. I married Karen Pride in '83, we had two k...Expand for more
ids, Brianne, and Kyle. In 1990 I relocated us to Milwaukee, WI so they'd be raised in a smaller community, and to take a position as Senior Videographer at Milwaukee Public Television. I've been shooting weekly magazine style shows, and lots of documentaries, writing, editing, producing, and teaching an elective master class in HD production at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
Karen and I divorced in 2003...there's a lot more to every aspect of this story, and of course I have my own inimitable way of telling those stories. I've had double bypass surgery, spinal fusion, both knees scoped, but I'm still at work. I was nominated for a regional emmy this year, not the first time. I have a significant body of work, been shooting in HD since '97...but put my family first, I am very close to my kids, still friends with both my ex's, and enjoy a good life...I'm a bona fide survivor.
Tennessee Williams said, "A high station in life is earned by the gallantry with which appalling experiences are survived with grace."
