Michael's Story

Isn't this where I tell you that I'm rich and famous... Sorry, I'm not. Like most people, a lot has happened since high school. Jobs around Detroit were scarce in 1980, so I moved to Houston, with Tim Sherman, looking for better opportunities. It was a lot of fun but it didn't jump start our careers as planned. After a year of dead-end jobs, I joined the USAF. Like most, I planned to stay for only four years. Over 24-years passed before I decided to retire. I grew to enjoy the military, the career challenges, travel, people, camaraderie, and new experiences. I spent the last 20 years of service working in the comm-electronics field, mostly computer maint. & secure comm. Four of those years were spent developing technical training materials, another six as a project manager installing LAN/WANs, targeting systems, and antennas in a global setting. I still work as an independent project manager, but the jobs have been sporadic the last couple years. I'm currently an IT Manager for the Bureau of Census (Dept of Commerce). While active duty, I saw much of the lower 48, as well as Maui and Alaska. As for overseas travel, Germany, South Korea, L...Expand for more
uxembourg, Honduras, and China bring back fond memories. I met Faye, my wife of 20 years, while stationed in Arkansas; she was an Air Force brat. We have two boys; Jake is 30 months, and Ryan is 17 months old. Most of you probably have college age kids. We tried to have kids earlier, but it didn't happen till after Hurricane Katrina. Yeah, we were living on the Mississippi coast when she blew into town. We had 9.5 ft of water in our living room. Any ways, we tried unsuccessfully for 16 years to have kids. We blew a fortune on fertility clinics, but in the end had Jake the old fashioned way. Oddly enough, we gave Jake life while salvaging our lives after the storm. I love being a father, but sometimes miss the peace and quiet. I'm working on an MBA with concentrations in both Project Management and IT; and their indoor playing makes studying difficult at times. Being semi-retired; we have the luxury of spending a lot of time with the boys. Until they are older, we can be found in the back yard, at the park, or at Jungle Java.
