Stuarts draft, VA

Michael's Story

After Stuarts Draft I lived in the DC area for three years spending all my money on food, rent and FUN until I was encouraged to go to college. While in DC I had worked in VISTA at a youth center and had been taught some skills in the area of youth counselling, with drugs and depression. I used these to try to get a job at a college to help me pay the cost. Radford University offered me a job as a RA. That covered my room and board. Marriot Hotels had told me if I got the business degree that they would hire me into their management program but along the way I left the business school and decided to become a teacher. I also went out for the Soccer Team and ended up making it and playing for RU. After Radford I did a graduate program in ILL. in Higher Education management. After a year I returned to VA and finished my masters at VT. While finishing my last few classes I started teaching. YES the inmate was planning to take over the asylum. So for twenty years I taught social studies from grades 6 through 12. I worked for 5 years at Shawsville High School and then 13 years at Radford High school where I started the Soccer Program. Now you know I was not the normal kind of teacher, and I was more of a trouble maker. Now the madness gets worse. My Principal encouraged me to go back and get my second masters in School Admin. that would led to me becoming a Principal. Now some where Rudy Huff had a stroke. In fact I learned that Ms. Johnson did have one. Yet...Expand for more
for the next 20 years I worked as Principal first at Check Elementary School in Floyd County a K-7 school. I enjoyed 13 years working with the great kids in Check VA. Then because I had been working 30 minutes from home I had to find a job closer to home. So I accepted a position at Pulaski High School as an AP. Then they moved me to the Principal of Kriser Elementary as the Principal. Then they moved me to Pulaski Elementary. After three years there I considering retiring but when a Middle School Social Studies teaching position came open I decided to return to the classroom for two more years. Then I retired. That only lasted one year when a friend called me and told me he had a job for me at Radford High School. I told him I was not giving to give up my retirement so he is paying me hourly to work with a special group of kids who were in danger of not finishing high school. The past spring all of my kids earned their diplomas. So Im on year three of working with my kids and it feels a lot like "Welcome back Kotter". This year I learned that I taught the parents of half of my kids and the school secretary was one of my first students as well as the school bookkeeper. They never forget to remind me Im OLD. I just cant stop answering the school bell and now my daughter has my old job here at Radford High School and I get to work with her. So Im still stomping out ignorance where ever it raises it ugly head. Im going through a pair of shoes every month.
