Michael's Story

Life During high school, I wanted to pursue a career in law. This was not to be. My father retired from the Army in 1963 and bought a partnership Lakewood Hardware and Paint. He passed away on Thanksgiving Day 1965. My goal to attend Gonzaga ended since money was tight. I attended Pacific Lutheran University and had a double major of business administration and political science. While at PLU, I worked part-time in the bookstore, as a waiter at the FT Lewis Officers' Club and as a teaching assistant to the Chair of the Political Science Department. Like many of you, I was in the first selective service lottery. My birthday was the 3rd drawn. I knew I did not have to worry about finding a job. I enlisted in the Army and was trained as a Special Agent, Military Intelligence (MOS 97B). Following training I was assigned to the Special Operations Detachment, 115th Military Intelligence Group, FT Lewis. I conducted overt and covert intelligence investigations. I eventually became the Assistant NCO of the Special Operations Detachment. During this time I met Bride #1. Not the best decision I ever made. But there are 2 beautiful sons and grandchildren that I treasure. In 1984, I met my soul mate. Ramona and married in 1985. Two sons and one daughter joined the Hanlon clan. Ramona has stuck with me through thick and thin. I love her so deeply. She is my best friend. Life has been an odessey since the 1986 Reunion. Ramona and I are now "empty nesters" which I suspect is the case for most of us. Our children and grandchildren are scattered across the United States--California, Utah Michigan and Nebraska. While I miss the kids, it is fun ...Expand for more
being a couple again only this time we have money. I have spent a majority of my career working in labor relations in the pulp and paper industry. About 7 years ago, I decided I needed to step sideways in my career and work for in a non-union environment. My last career positon was with Novartis Consumer Health-OTC in Lincoln, Nebraska. My job was Director-Human Resources, North America Supply Chain. I had responsibility for manufacturing and R&D in Lincoln, a manufacturing facility Humacao, Puerto Rico and 2 distribution centers. A "one degree of seperation" thing exists. For those of you who went to Mann Jr. High, you may remember the great Ex-Lax switch that someone pulled. The "degree of seperation: the plant in PR is the world site for Ex-Lax. Lincoln, Nebraska is a lot like Tacoma/Lakewood was until the mid-1980's. I never thought that I would enjoy the "Great Plains", but the quality of life is excellent. 10/16/08 I have retired from corporate life and am working for myself as a stock options day trader. Trading has been a hobby and now is my full time vocation. My "Now" picture is a slight cheat. It was taken 10 years ago. There is more white than brown in my hair today. My latest picture is from 2015, includes my love, my middle son, Marc, and his bride, Colleen. We were on Mackinac Island on a lay over on the Mackinac Race. We didn't finish well but had fun. Not every thing has been Sun shine and roses. I have had 3 heart attacks. Each requiring a stent and rehab. I have succeeded in stop smoking, drinking and have lost 40 pounds. I am one of the lucky ones. We now have 5 grand kids who tickle my heart and sooth my soul.
