Michael's Story

Life I graduated from Beallsville in 1990. My parents sold their farm and we moved a couple weeks after graduation. My Dad moved closer to work and also accepted a full-time position as the Pastor of the Wheeling Church of God. I started working as a part-time security guard in Wheeling and an arcade attendant at the Ohio Valley mall. In the Fall of 1990, I was living in a small apartment in Nelsonville, OH with Roger Miller and Bruce Seifert. We were attending Hocking College and trying to survive on our wits and little cash. I spent two years at Hocking in the Police Science Program. I graduated in 1992 with my Associate Degree and completed the Ohio Police Officer Certification. That summer I enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Combat Medic and departed for Basic Training and AIT. I returned just before Christmas. I was a certified police officer and combat medic at the age of 20. I volunteered for a military tour at Ft. Indian Town Gap, PA. I spent the rest of the year as a combat medic at the infantry NCO academy. It was a good time and I made the necessary cash to return to college. That fall I enrolled full-time at Ohio University working on my degree in Criminal Justice. I was also accepted into the ROTC program. I spent the next two years working night shift security, participating in ROTC and attending classes. I graduated with Bachelors of Criminal Justice and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in June 96. It sounds like a lot of work. Don't worry; I had plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Athens experience. While at O.U. I met my future wife Stacy during a mandatory CPR class. We were married in Bethesda Mar 1996. It was tough preparing for graduation, completing ROTC and throwing a wedding! Fortunately Stacy took the reigns and threw a great wedding. Mathew Mullet and...Expand for more
Roger Miller were in the wedding. In 1997 our first daughter Cassidy was born while we were stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX. I was attending the Air Defense Officer Basic Course. That Summer I was hired as the Director of a Federal Correction Center in Charleston, WV. We stayed in Charleston for two years and then returned to Ohio. We did not enjoy living in the Charleston area. The chemical valley was not a healthy place to live! In 1999 we moved to Belle Center, Oh. I was hired as the Operations Manager for a small Correctional Facility in Marysville, OH. I participated in the Reserve and then National Guard from 1992 to my deployment in 2003. I was the HHB Commander for the 2-174th ADA, AVENGER when we deployed in support of OIF. Our unit deployed for a little under three months before we returned home. Our unit did not make it to Iraq however the deployment got me hooked. In the winter of 2003 I returned to active duty as a member the Ground-based Midcourse Defense, Brigade located in Colorado Springs, CO. We spent three great years in Colorado prior to moving to our current location in Ft. Greely, AK. I enjoy working in National Missile Defense and will continue with the program until I retire or until they tell me to leave. I am currently one of five crew directors responsible for the missile defense complex at Ft. Greely, AK. It is a challenging career that I have embraced. In my spare time I am pursuing a Graduate in Space Systems Management. Stacy and I have been married for 11 years. We have four kids: Cassidy 10, Madison 5, and Ethan 20 months. Zach is our newest addition due 4 April 07. We have a giant (140lbs) Newfoundland puppy named Dakota. We picked him up on our move to Alaska. The family enjoys sports, camping and outdoor activities. I hope you enjoyed our bio.
