Michael's Story

Hi Everyone, It is amazing how fast time goes since many of us went to the Orange Show Grounds to watch SBHS football. Yes I am still tall, but I have filled out a bit from SBHS days. Below summarizes much of what I have been doing since graduation in 1969. After I left San Bernardino High School in 1969, I attended The University of Southern California where I met my wife Beverly and obtained my bachelors degree in 1973. I then worked on and received my Masters in Business Administration (Marketing) in 1974 from USC as well. Beverly and I were married in 1983 and now have been married for 38 years. I began my career four days after graduation in 1974 as I went to work in the printing / packaging business for Container Corporation of America. We produced retail packaging for tissue, cereal, beer, raisins and other retail products. The business was bought and sold five times over 40 years including to Mobil Oil, Jefferson Smurfit Corporation, Smurfit Stone Container Corporation, Altivity and finally Graphic Packaging International. Through all of this I held positions in sales, finance, production and marketing and for 10 years was the General Manager of the Irvine, California Facility. I ultimately became Vice President and General Manager of the Western Region responsible for four plants and served in that job for four years and then Vice President of Sales and Product Development for three years. At the same time over the last 14 years I s...Expand for more
erved on the board of directors for KP Corporation, a Northern California company whose primary businesses are printing and fulfillment services. As of December of 2014, I retired from the fifth company in the chain, Graphic Packaging International after 40+ years with the combined companies. I was fortunate that in spite of working for international companies along the way my base was always in Irvine, California, a reasonable distance from friends and family in San Bernardino. Beverly retired from her position as Superintendent of the Cypress, CA school district in June, 2015 to join me in retirement. We continue to live in Orange County. We are planning travel and time with family members moving forward. My mom still lives in San Bernardino so I frequently get over there to see her when she is not traveling. As hobbies I enjoy working around the house, golf, listening to music and working on my 1956 Chevrolet. I guess I can't get too far away from the 1953 Chevrolet that I drove during my senior year at SBHS! I am also a die hard Lakers and USC football fan. Over the last couple of years I have been working on my CFP degree (Certified Financial Planner Degree). Although I have no plans to go back to work, I do have an interest in helping people with their personal finances. I have given classes to a number of organizations including our church with emphasis on young folks looking to improve and plan for their financial future. Mike Hempstead
