Michael's Story
Life
When I left Monterey in the early stages of 1973, and trekked off to Cupertino. I thought my stay among the orchard lined streets would be short lived. The stay became anything other than short -- I live only three miles from that first apartment. The only thing that was short lived were the orchards. In the thirty plus years I have called the area home one marriage came and went, the second thrives and produced one child and, for me, a step child. There have been too many jobs at too many companies (most of which joined the long-gone orchards). Though I sufferd through a too long period of underemployment (that ended in 2005) that period of eking out a living taught me more than all of the years of working, and all of the hours of classroom learning. I build and remodel, cook, coach softball. The only thing else I really want at this point is to move away and close the book on Michael In Silicon Valley.
I have traveled extensively - one of the perks of working for firms with international ties - and seen a bit more than merely airports, hotels and meeting rooms.
I visit the Peninsula only a few times a year; when I do, I drive past Monterey High, Walter Colton and what was Monta Vista Elementary; I pass the homes I lived in on Bartolomea, Toyon, Mar Vista, Toda Vista and Walter Colton. Locally, I often do the same, passing the locations that once housed Gill cable TV, Qume, Wyse, Shugart, Kearney Magnetics, and Insite Peripherals. When I do, I wonder what became of those I knew years ago. Be safe, be well.
