Michael's Story
Well, I did not graduate with my Walker classmates due to the fact that my family moved to Texas in July 1972 but my connections and loyalties were always there. I moved to Mesquite Texas and attended Mesquite High School, home of the Skeeters I enjoyed my time there and was in the JROTC and enjoyed that immensly.
I did graduate in June 1974 and went into the Marine Corps 2 days later. I spent three years in the Corps and was stationed in Camp Pendleton CA and then at Ft. Meade as a Marine Guard for NSA. While I was there I met my wife and in August 1977 I got married to Jackie. I got out of the Corps in June 1977 and moved to Tennessee for 3 months, got tired of being a civilian and went into the Army. We were at Ft. Meade for 18 months, where my daughter Leigh was born. We got orders for Wertheim Germany from March 1979 till April 1982, from there we went to Ft. Devens MA, for 6 months, to Ft. Lewis WA for 19 months, back to Ft. Devens for 11 months and then to Berlin, GE for 5 years. We were there when the Berlin Wall fell. While we were here my son Bill was born in Feb 1990. I was trained as a computer engineer and did that job in Berlin and when the time came to get out I was medically discharged due to injuries that I had gotten on active duty. We moved to Maryland and I got a job at the Pentagon with Contel/GTE and we were there until 1998 when I was offered a job with Mantech in Germany again. We were there from 1998 till 2006 and along the way I went back to GTE/General Dynamics. I was an embedded contractor with 1st Infantry Division and was deployed to Bosnia in 2001, Kosovo in 2002 and Iraq in 2004-1005. After I returned from Iraq I took my family to Spain and Ireland for vacations. After our time in Germany we were offered a position at Charlottesville VA and we took ...Expand for more
that in June of 2006. I did some time there but decided that a position with Mantech in Kuwait would help our financial situtation so here I am now. I have been in Kuwait since 26 July 2008. My favorite things to do are reading and playing computer games and studying history. Afte rworking on my bachelors degree the whole time I was in the military I was awarded my BS in Computer Information Systems in Sept 1996.
The things that I remember about Walker High School were the pep rally's, Mr. Skipper the band teacher (I played the flute), Mr. "Earl the Pearl" Wilson the Chemistry teacher, Mr. Johnson the assistant principle, Vance Berry and I getting caught one morning skipping an awards assembly and getting caught, Rick "Spook" Jones and his Chevelle SS, playing Gordon on Friday nights, the dances and watching some poor sub-freshman being hoisted up the flagpole by his belt. I remember PE and the running around the fields and all of the different people that I met there, Vance and Victor Berry and our Scouting experiences, Debbie Bell, Anita Jakes, Jackie and Donna Stokes, Ken and LuAnn Kenan, Mark Simms, Chuck Roddy, Denise Petrie, Sandra Kyle, Karen Chitwood, Beverly Radford, and so many others that I cannot think of at this time. Their associations helped me at a time that I needed the support that they gave me unknowingly and I want to thank them at this time.
The things that I remember about Mesquite High School were the Friday night football games and being the ROTC gate guard, the arcade across the street while waiting for the bus, JROTC uniform days, Mechanical Drawing class, drivers ed classes, Larry Jenkins, Ken Abrahamson, David Riley, Barry Marable, Robert Marable, Mike Kennedy, Charyl Payne, Terry Kruse, and many others who made the time in High School pass with good memories.
