Michael's Story

As most of you know, I went to Basic Training in Ft Jackson, SC for the US Army after Junior year. After Graduation, I shipped out for Advanced Training in Ft Leonardwood, MO and the Army's Airborne School in Ft Benning, GA to learn how to jump out of airplanes. Upon completion of the Airborne training, I was assigned to the 528th Special Operations Support unit in Ft Bragg, NC for almost 4 years. While I was there I got deployed or sent to Haiti for almost 6 months. I also went to Panama, Egypt & Thailand while I was stationed there. It was a big eye opener as to how the rest of the world lived. I re-enlisted to stay in the Army for 4 more years and requested to be re-assigned to a unit in Germany. I went to Germany in January 1999. While I was there, I got deployed to Kosovo for 6 months. I also got to travel all over Europe while I was there. I went to Spain for spring break, Paris, FR for the Millennium New Years party, and plenty other places while I was there. I also met my current wife while I was stationed over there. We got Married in December 2001. We had my 1st son in May 2002. I then re-enlisted to stay in the Army for 6 more years and requested to go to Korea. I went to Korea in August 2002. I was there for a year and a half. I was stationed barely 10 miles south of the DMZ which is the border between North and South Korea. My wife & I had our 2nd son in June 2003. While I was in Korea, I got selected to be put on Recruiting duty. I started recruiting duty in April 2004. I got assigned to a Recruiting office in Modesto, CA and I was doing very good at the Recruiting job...Expand for more
so I got selected to stay as a permanent recruiter. I got reassigned to Sparks, NV to be the Station Commander of the Recruiting Station. I was stationed there for just under 4 years. We were recognized for winning the top small station of the year 2 times and were runner-up for the other 2 years. I was then elected to take charge of a station in Litchfield Park, AZ in early 2012. My family nd I moved to the Glendale, AZ area and I quickly started running the center doing well. I was later selected to b the company's Master Recruiter Trainer. I held that position for just under a year until I was selected to be the company's First Sergeant. With that position, I was responsible for leading 9 different Army Recruiting Stations that were dispersed all over the western half of AZ to include: Yuma, Lake Havasu, Bullhead City, Flagstaff, Prescott, Goodyear, Surprise, Glendale, and Arrowhead. This assignment kept me on my toes and on the road a lot of the time. My wife and I have also finally purchased our first home that we can call our own. It is over 2600 sq. ft. sitting on a 78000st. lot. It is a new build, so we don't have to worry what anybody else might have done in it prior to us moving in. I recently submitted my request for retirement and was approved for an October 31, 2015 retirement. There will be a retirement ceremony held in Ft Huachuca, AZ on October 1, 2015. My 2 sons that live with me are going into high school soon and are tired of moving, so they are very excited about the change. I look forward to the new challenge of working outside of the military. Wish us luck!!!!
