Michael's Story

I graduated from Carolina in 1973, after attending Louisburg College for two years. I worked for Louisburg College, the Fayetteville Police Department and Cablevision of Fayetteville before moving to wild, wonderful West Virginia in 1979. I lived in Charleston, the capital city, for 31 years (!), having worked at two local colleges and a major medical center (for 18 years), and where I was assistant director of human resources at the West Virginia Medical Institute for more than nine years. I continued working for the Medical Institute, although remotely, from our new house in Greenville, NC, home of the ECU Pirates! ARRRGH!! On Dec. 31, 2011, the opportunitiy to continue working remotely ended, but it was a nice ride. I have been retired since then, with the exception of some short-term, part-time jobs.. My life partner, Dan Deahl, and I were together for 36 years. He was a West Virginia native and worked at two of the local chemical plants in Charleston before having to go on permanent disability shortly before we left West Virginia, due to a condition known as neuro-endocrine carcinoid syndrome. We were married in Washington, DC, on March 6, 2014, and he passed away on December 19, 2015.. He was the love of my life! I live alone now with our Boston Terrier, Dinky. My two brothers, Jim and Steve, who both attended FHS/FTS, still live in NC...Expand for more
(Fayetteville and Ocean Isle Beach, respectively). Sadly, our wonderful mother passed away on Jan. 20, 2018, at the age of 94.. My drop-dead-gorgeous niece, Blaire, lives in Bolivia, NC, and works in Wilmington, and completed her MBA in the spring of 2012. She married Eric Lanier three years ago.. I was 30 years old when she was born, and this year she'll turn 40! (Yeah, I'm feelin' old.) Unfortunately, one of my best friends in high school, Charlie Johnson, died unexpectedly at the young age of 51. What a wonderful person and true, lifelong friend he was! I miss him, as I'm sure many other members of the Class of '69 do. He was just one of the nicest, most down-to-earth and likeable people anyone would ever want to know. Charlie absolutely loved the movie, "The Graduate," as well as its Simon and Garfunkle soundtrack. I think of him fondly every time I hear one of those tunes. Hey, does anybody remember Mrs. Godwin's senior English class? How about Mrs. Grady's Latin I class in the '68-'69 school year? What a hoot she was! Those were the days of... uncertainty, with our whole lives ahead of us, feeling like adults but often acting like kids, having lots of same-age friends, thinking we MIGHT be cool. I don't believe I'd want to go back. Remembering those days from the perspective of a much wiser 70-year-old is perfectly fine with me!
